I have never necessarily had any interests or hobbies to where I knew exactly what I intended to major in. However, during my junior year of high school, I took a marketing class and discovered I was fairly good at it. We would do many projects where we would figure out the age group of certain products and how to advertise in certain ways to where it was appealing to the age group assigned. Therefore, I decided I would like to have a career in advertising / marketing management. As mentioned in the article “Promotions” from Marketing Management, marketing managers roles come down to developing pricing strategies, planning different campaigns, and simply the layout of marketing plans (167-196). I would personally enjoy the aspect of overseeing advertisements the most, however, I would be glad to do any of it.
According to the O
...ccupational Outlook Handbook, the average salary for marketing management is $130,000 which averages to about $64 an hour (167-196). In my opinion, that is enough to support myself, so I am content with that amount. It requires a four-year bachelor's degree which is easily attainable. There are also over 200,000 marketing jobs in the country. The growth percentage for this occupation is continuously increasing, therefore, it seems to be a reasonable career. Advertisement will continue to grow and will always be apart, especially with the significant growth in social media. With this fact in mind, this career is reasonable because individuals with this profession will always be requested, therefore insuring financial stability. Another pro for this career is it can be very flexible. I can correlate my work with my passions and create /
oversee advertisements for things I enjoy. I believe it is important that your work be enjoyable, so this is very beneficial. On the contrary, cons for this industry can include having to be a strong leader, possible travels, and the demands of being a manager (Hays, n.d.).
All three of these things can be very difficult if you do not have the personality for them because it can be hard to change just for a job. The Holland Code is compiled of five different personalities; realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional (Ashbridge, Susie, et al, n.d.). After taking the quiz to see what professions best fit my personality, I was assigned ‘social’ professions. These included teaching, nursing, and being an assistant. While I always foresaw myself as having a career in elementary education, after researching the profession, I decided that marketing is a more financially stable option. While I believe I would be successful in this marketing career choice, a setback would be that I must be a leader. I have always had more of a ‘follower’ personality, so I would be rather difficult for me to make such a jurassic change. As previously mentioned, this profession only requires a four-year bachelor's degree. Therefore, I should obtain this degree in 2022. After having the degree, it should not be too difficult to find a job. I will more than like make a LinkedIn profile to help put myself out there to businesses and future employers before I graduate, so I can already have a few options when by the time graduation rolls around.
