Nurses should adhere to six virtues. Caring and compassion are considered invaluable qualities in nursing (Schantz, 2007). While caring and compassion are separate traits, they have similar definitions. Caring is defined as showing kindness or concern towards others (Oxford, 2013).
According to Oxford (2013), compassion is the feeling of sympathetic pity and concern for others' suffering or misfortunes. Some individuals choose nursing as their profession due to a desire to care for others. The presence of compassion enables nurses to establish a therapeutic relationship with patients, building trust and promoting a sense of self-worth when patients feel they are receiving care. ...ical needs, and this perception of being cared for can encourage patient engagement. Many nurses adhere to the principle "Do unto others as you would want done unto you" (Watson, 1988).
Caring and compassion are crucial qualities for nurses, as they are the reasons why individuals aspire to be in this profession. Compassion surpasses mere sympathy towards a patient in need; it serves as the impetus that propels nurses to act upon their inherent desire to assist. When demonstrating compassion, nurses exceed the fulfillment of their professional responsibilities; they do so out of an inner compulsion to make an impact as human beings. While all six virtues encompass the nursing profession, caring and compassion hold particular significance when it comes to patient care.
