The more people that are armed with the knowledge of The Second Amendment, the better. The Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights was ratified more than 200 years ago, assuring that it is an individual’s constitutional right to bear arms. This Amendment is one right which Americans should not be denied. The government does not have the right to disarm American citizens.

If the government disarmed the American citizens, it would affect crime rates, occurrences of mass shootings, and hunters and farmers. If the government disarms the citizens, the crime rate will decrease. This perception by some has been proven to be incorrect. Many pro-gun advocates say that having stricter gun laws would lead to a decrease in crime rate and suicide occurrences. However, most major politicians are not eve

n aware of the crime drop that has occurred in the last 20 years.

A 2013 Pew Research Poll found that 56 percent of respondents from the survey thought that gun crime had gone up over the past 20 years, and only 12 percent were aware it had actually declined (Doherty). Many gun control advocates also say that gun violence is one of the leading causes of death in America. However, according to Business Insider, this is inaccurate. Being assaulted by a gun is not even in the top fifteen leading causes of death (Brueck). An individual is more likely to die by falling than happen to be assaulted by a gun. More than 60 percent of people in the US who die from guns die by suicide (“Gun Deaths”).

This proves that most deaths by guns are by suicide, not by violence. In addition to this, both

disarming American citizens and higher gun control regulations are not correlated with a decrease in mass shootings. Chicago is an example of this. The city of Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in America, and is still one of the most dangerous cities in the United States, according to CBS News. CBS states, “The FBI says 765 people were murdered in Chicago in 2016. That is more than the total number of deaths in New York City and Los Angeles combined (“The Most Dangerous Cities in the World”).

Taking guns away from law-abiding citizens would leave them defenseless and helpless. Switzerland, on the other hand, has not had a mass shooting since 2001, and their murder rate is near zero. Switzerland also has about 2 million privately owned guns in a population of around 8 million (Brueck). Approximately 25 percent of Switzerland’s population legally carry guns and the overall murder rate is around zero. However, Switzerland has a mandatory military service for men. All men that are able between the ages of 18 and 34 are given a gun and are trained.

This leads to a higher educated population about guns and gun safety. Switzerland even has the third-highest ration of firearms per 100 citizens (Brueck). The government does not have the right to refuse the Second Amendment to any law-abiding citizen of the United States, especially those who use firearms for self-defense, hunting, or for sport. In 2011 there were 13.7 million hunters in the United States over age 16, 12.7 million of whom used rifles, shotguns or handguns for hunting, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Burke).

This shows that almost 24

percent of the United States population uses rifles, shotguns, or handguns for hunting. This percentage, however, does not include those who use these firearms for sport. Some of these hunters include the farmers who live, work, and hunt on United States soil. The removal of a gun from their possession would limit their ability to hunt and provide food for their family. Without a gun, these farmers would have a harder time fending off a coyote who is trying to snatch a newborn calf.

This well-known quote also plays perfectly in the following situation “Rather be safe than sorry.” Even though it is commonly thought that the likeliness for intruders and robbers is low, especially in rural areas, the chance still remains. These self-defense mechanisms could help save lives and the lives of their families. Outlawing guns only leads to different weapons being used as an alternative, such as knives, bombs, and vehicle attacks, some of which are more dangerous than a gun.

Even though the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights was written more than 200 years ago, it’s effect and meaning still stands today. The government does not have the right to disarm and confiscate guns from law-abiding citizens. The Second Amendment assures an individual’s right to bear arms. Gun control laws can actually increase crime rate, the opposite of what most politicians would like to believe. The confiscation of guns could decrease self-defense safety, and could increase other intents of harm.
