Art and science are so divergent. Art encompasses imaginative realm of aesthetic qualities while science exists in a world of mathematical relationships among quantifiable properties. Despite the differences, there have been great artistic and scientific discoveries that have had a great impact beyond their particular fields (Shlain 15).

One scientific invention of the period 1500-1700 that had a significant impact on the human history is the invention of the watch in 1500 by a German locksmith Peter Henlein. Watches have ever since been used to tell time (Haven, 31). At the moment, the watches are used everywhere; from schools, work, media, and travel. On the other hand, the artistic invention of the same period is the invention of photography by Louis Daguerre in 1839 (Haven, 35). This has forever changed the nature of visual representation. Finally, the greatest scientific invention from 1900 to date is the invention of the computer. The first programmable computer, Z1 was invented by Konrad Zuse in 1936. Nowadays, computers are used everywhere. On the other, hand the artistic invention of the period was the collage invented by Pablo Picasso. The collage has changed the way art is represented (Heine and Michael 63).
