As the cold breeze from the shores of Salton Sea sends shivers down John's spine on this sunny Monday morning, he stands at his house doorstep, clutching a large traveler's bag. Simultaneously, his father is showering in the bathroom while his mother attends to her usual morning tasks. Although the compound emanates tranquility, John's unsettled demeanor implies that he is deeply troubled by something.
This is a significant day for John, a peasant's son, marking his persevering journey. It is not only a joyous occasion for the Joachim family, but also a testament to those who doubted John's ability to escape poverty. However, despite the festive atmosphere, John appears discontented and perplexed. While his mother hums a tune in the kitchen while making breakfast.
John was fixated on his watch for nearl
...y three minutes, while someone approached the gate. This caused him to hurriedly return home and seemingly ignore the voice coming from outside. As he rushed towards his house, he almost collided with his father, who was also on his way to open the gate. John's final words before quickly disappearing into his bedroom were, "I apologize, Dad!" Afterward, Joe managed to enter. Joe is John's childhood friend and they grew up together on the outskirts of Alameda Street. He was John's closest friend.
He knew all the secrets of this young man even more than anyone else in the town. He heard the rumors and he was coming to confirm. Is it the rumor everyone is delighted in this family? But of course rumor- mongers are everywhere to tap every word coming from passers-by and construct a story from the whole thing. It is not b
surprise that Joe is among them because is still part of the larger community. Joe is known in this family, right from the dog, spoon, plate or a cat in this house, he does not even need introduction even when the owner of the house is away.
Joe greets the old man and quickly goes to the kitchen to say hello to his mom. She is not only John's mom, but also Joe's mom because of their strong friendship that has made John a part of their family. Joe asks his mom about John's whereabouts after exchanging a few words. She replies that she left him standing at the door. Joe doesn't ask any more questions and immediately goes to search for his friend.
At the door, all Joe can see is a traveler's bag, making him wonder where its owner could be. Thankfully, Joachim comes to his rescue and delivers the eagerly awaited message to Joe.
Joe is informed by the man of the house that his friend is located in his bedroom. Joe promptly heads to the house and attempts to access the locked door, but he encounters difficulty. He calls out to his friend using the nickname "Ken," which was previously used when comparing him to former US president John F.
Kennedy, upon hearing the voice and recognizing his nickname, immediately knew it must be Joe. In that moment, he realized he had been hiding under his bed. Curiosity and fear sparked within him as he cautiously emerged from his hiding spot and cautiously opened the door. His breaths were heavy, noticeable even to Joe, who observed a troubled demeanor. "Are you alright?" Joe inquired, fixing
his gaze directly into the eyes of his friend.
"Oh! Yes! Yes! I am ... Indeed, how have you been?" he speaks rapidly, scanning the room as if addressing no one. "I've been doing well. In fact, my father promised to start a small business for me while I wait to go to college. By the way, I heard you got a scholarship. Is it true?" Joe is filled with excitement and eagerly awaits confirmation. "Oh yes! Let's go have breakfast. I'm running late, so please hurry!" The seriousness in his tone makes Joe realize that his friend is genuinely in a rush. Joe can't contain his joy and begins shedding tears of happiness, confusion, and disappointment at the thought of parting ways with the only person who brought him comfort during times of sadness. This individual has stood by him since he was 3 years old and vowed never to leave - a friend, an aid, an accomplice, a brother... among other roles.
Joe was in tears while his friend looked on apathetically. He wished this day would never have arrived. John had achieved exceptional success, earning a scholarship to study medicine at Harvard University. Today marked the momentous occasion of him joining this prestigious institution, which brought great excitement to the town. The people regarded John as a role model and a beacon of hope, being the first person from Alameda town to attain such remarkable accomplishment. All hopes and dreams of the community were placed upon him, wondering if he truly was their awaited savior. Despite facing numerous challenges growing up as the sole son in the Joachim family, John's basic needs were fortunately
met, including daily bread.
Despite the financial constraints that prevented John's father from supporting his education beyond junior school, it was nothing short of a miracle that he managed to continue studying with the aid of God. The Christian values instilled by his father had strengthened John's family. Despite their impoverished state, his father commanded respect within the community and was sought after for advice on communal matters. Growing up in such an environment, John became a reliable source of support for his friends when they faced difficulties. As everyone finished breakfast, they praised and blessed John; however, a tinge of sadness lingered on their faces, indicating a sense of loneliness. Only now is it truly dawning on John the significant role he plays within this vast family.
Unable to hold back his tears, John cried even more deeply, drawing the attention of everyone around him. "John, stop crying! It's okay! Please, John!" His mother's plea to her son echoed in the air. In the midst of this emotional scene, John woke up and picked up his bag, making his way towards the gate. Joe accompanied him while his father and mother bid them farewell from a distance. They were heading towards a stage just a few meters away from their home.
Interestingly, nobody has uttered a single word as they have been walking for approximately 20 minutes. As they are about to cross the road, John is moving as if he is visually impaired and unaware of an oncoming car. Thankfully, his friend intervenes by pushing him to the side. "Are you unable to see?" Joe angrily questions John. However, John appears indifferent to his friend's admonishment.
Continuing
on their journey, they reach the bus stage and the bus arrives promptly. However, John becomes frightened when he spots two policemen in the distance before he can board the bus. Joe is unaware of this and only hears John say "Goodbye" before he suddenly disappears. In an instant, John is gone and Joe is left holding a small bag with some of John's clothes in his right hand. Anxiously waiting until dusk, Joe feels disappointed and eventually takes the bag back home.
Two days following John's departure, two police officers arrive at Joachim's residence early in the morning to apprehend the suspect involved in the rape case. The only individuals aware of this crime were a 15-year-old girl, who was the victim, and the town chief. As John couldn't be located, his parents are taken along to provide their statement at the halls of justice.
