Both A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and I Have a Dream by Martin Luther King, Jr. address themes of segregation, nonviolent protest, and the preservation of the dream for equality. In A Raisin in the Sun, Linder argues that it is beneficial for the happiness of all involved that African American families reside in their own communities in Clybourne Park.
King states that even though it has been a hundred years, African Americans still find themselves trapped in poverty while surrounded by wealth. He acknowledges that whites do not allow integration between the races. Despite the challenges and disappointments of the present, King maintains his optimism by sharing his dream. Similarly, Beneatha criticizes the superficiality of a vision that
...fails to address the true struggles of humanity. She believes it is too simplistic and idealistic, akin to a child's perspective. Both King and Beneatha possess dreams and uphold lofty ideals, despite acknowledging the difficulties they may encounter in achieving them.
Walter says, "Never mind my emotions - do you have anything else to say about the importance of communication?... Leave my house, man." King states, "We must ensure that our peaceful demonstrations do not turn into acts of aggression." They both advocate for peaceful verbal protest instead of resorting to violence. These quotes demonstrate the shared themes in the two works. The three similarities are: advocating for racial integration, promoting peaceful methods during protests, and pursuing seemingly impossible dreams.
