Everyman is a morality play written by an anonymous author in the 15th century. It follows Everyman, a representative of humanity as he attempts to weigh his life’s worth and prepare himself for death. Throughout the play, Everyman is confronted with moral choices that lead him to discover what he values most and how he will be judged during the afterlife. The main character, Everyman, serves as an allegorical representation of mankind’s journey through life. The characters surrounding him each represent different aspects or vices – Good Deeds (his spiritual companion), Fellowship, Kindred, Goods/ Riches and others – who accompany him on his quest to gain redemption from God. Each step of Everyman’s journey reveals more about his soul’s condition before judgment day arrives at last. His encounters with these various figures offer insight into both the challenges faced by human beings trying to maintain their faith while pursuing worldly goods and pleasures; but also show us how hard it can be to remember our duty towards our fellow man when we are so easily distracted by material wealth. At its core, Everyman teaches readers that no matter how much they achieve in this world ” whether it’s fame or fortune ” only their good deeds will follow them into eternity when judgment day comes knocking at their door. In essence, this play serves as a reminder that no matter what path one takes throughout life; all must ultimately answer for themselves to God above all else: For I shall die without remedy/ Except I have mercy of almighty God. (lines 479-480). Through its powerful imagery and symbolism, Everyman offers readers timeless lessons about mortality and ethics that remain applicable even today ” reminding us once again why it remains such an enduring classic piece of literature after centuries since its first performance.
