My senior relative and I spent two weeks together in Canada.
Last year, the family moved from Kenya to Canada and currently resides in a two-bedroom apartment located less than a mile away from Niagara Falls. Upon awakening at 7 am, I felt the sun's rays burning my skin but it also brought me delight because we were heading to New York, USA shortly. At 10:00 am, we had to depart as per my father's instructions which I prepared for accordingly. As I made my way towards the bathroom, I found my mother using it and requested some time before she vacated.
After waiting for ten minutes, I gave up on sleeping because the blazing sun was coming through the window and a chirping bird was annoyingly singing in multiple directions from a branch outside. Trying t
...o scare it away by barking didn't work, so I yelled loudly to successfully frighten the bird off. My niece walked in and asked why I had behaved that way; I responded by asking if the bathroom was available and she confirmed it was. After taking a bath, I started selecting my outfit for an upcoming journey.
Choosing to dress in casual attire, consisting of jogging pants, a tee, and a cap, I bid farewell to my relatives with a hint of sadness at the thought of leaving them. At around 10:15, our van arrived and we loaded our belongings before setting off for our destination. On the journey there, I sat alongside my mother in the back while my father occupied the front seat next to the driver. As we approached the train station entrance, I gazed out of the windo
and caught sight of its shiny exterior.
After paying the driver, we headed towards the counter at the station. The interior was compact and differed from British train stations. Despite being an international rail track, there was a lack of security or physical obstacles preventing passengers from accessing the train or crossing the tracks. The train tracks were located on the opposite side upon entrance and one could walk straight through the station to reach the other side and wait for the arrival of the train. My father had handled the ticket arrangements and we had half an hour until our train arrived.
At 11:00, the person at the counter announced the arrival of the train. We were told to prepare our tickets and luggage. As I waited on the platform, I noticed the ground vibrating, the track moving, and stones popping out. The train came into view with its massive wheels in motion. Despite its size, the train came to a stop. Initially, I was unsure about how we would board due to the doors being above the wheels at a height of one foot. Suddenly, hydraulic systems lowered the train with a loud hissing sound. The conductor emerged by first poking his head out before descending down the stairs of the entrance which had unfolded.
Observing him entering the station, I questioned my father regarding his purpose as nobody else on the platform could withstand waiting to enter the air-conditioned coach. The intense heat caused me to sweat profusely, drenching my t-shirt. Approximately ten minutes later, the conductor emerged from the station and declared, "All New York travelers, proceed to the third carriage."
The conductor announced
that the first ten ticket numbers could board. Our ticket, number five, allowed us to make our way to the train doors where another conductor inspected our tickets. Once inside the cool carriage, my Mum pointed out our seats and I assisted my Dad with storing our luggage on the top cabinet. Feeling cold, I watched through the tinted window as the train departed at 12:00pm and approached the Rainbow bridge.
The Rainbow Bridge serves as a connection between businesses in America. During my train ride across the bridge, I had a final glimpse of the renowned Canadian Horse Shoe Falls, which was a spectacular view. As the train crossed the Rainbow Bridge, a rainbow appeared within the mist of Niagara Falls. We arrived at the American side where we went through customs. Unfortunately, what I believed to be a brief thirty-minute stop turned out to be an arduous two-hour delay.
Immigration officers escorted two people off a train while their dogs searched for drugs. One of the dogs jumped on a passenger, causing them to freeze. An officer asked the passenger to step outside while other passengers gossiped about the incident. Later, I woke up and asked my dad for the time; he replied that it was 17:00 but wasn't sure how long until we reached our destination.
While watching the landscape fly by through the train window, I observed how quickly the trees passed us due to our high speed. Feeling hungry, I informed my dad of my desire to visit the canteen at the back of the train. He warned me to be careful as I crossed through the passage that connects two carriages
in order to reach it.
As I entered the train, the floor shook and made it difficult for me to maintain my balance. The open space around me allowed the air to flow through. While walking through the train, I had to proceed through three carriages before reaching the canteen carriage at the end. To my dismay, there was only one staff member working and a long queue that appeared stagnant.
During my wait in the line, I conversed with an elderly woman about my origins and informed her of my satisfaction with my vacation thus far. Upon reaching the ordering counter, I requested Nachos and dip alongside a Pepsi though the pizza had been sold out. The total cost came to $4.95. As I returned to my seat, I observed the arrival of night just beyond the window.
While eating my food and chatting with my Dad, I eagerly expressed my excitement. Suddenly, the conductor alerted us that the train would shortly arrive in New York City. Glancing outside, I could see the dazzling lights of the towering skyscrapers, including the Empire State building casting its reflection on the river. Notably, the building's pinnacle was adorned with striking red, white, and blue stripes.
As we reached the underground station, the train halted causing a frenzy of passengers to head towards the entrance. Unfortunately, the majority of individuals in my carriage were disembarking leading to further difficulties when exiting the train. The situation was ironic, as initially I couldn't wait to board the train but now it seemed impossible to leave. Once we eventually stepped off, we discovered a congested platform and stifling ambiance. We struggled with our
luggage to ascend the escalators and waited at the top for my father's acquaintance.
