The professional driver, Mr Naimait Khan, from Cooperazione Italiana office, contributed to the consultant's travels in Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar and also assisted with the translations from Pakistani to English. The friendly attitude and hospitality of all the Pakistani people encountered during the mission, both within and outside of the working environment, is highly appreciated.
Introduction
In responding to inquiries from Istituto Agronomico per l’Oltremare – IAO, this report addresses concerns pertaining to the ‘Promozione della produzione e commercializzazione dell’olio di oliva in Pakistan’ (Promotion of the production and marketing of olive oil) project. The initiative, which is supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, General Direction Development Cooperation - GDCS and executed by IAO, is the focus of this document.

The consultant's terms of reference (ToR) outline four research questions that this report will address.
- to carry out the analysis of the edible oils currently used in Pakistan, setting out the most consumed and in which amount;
- to determine the production and purchasing price of the various categories of oils and set out the level of production and importation;
- to determine the collocation of olive oil in the Pakistani market and which part of the population has access to its purchase; from such analysis arises also the amount of product that can be absorbed by the national market;
- to determine, on the basis of the current production and purchasing price, the market segment olive oil could occupy in the Pakistani market.
During a three-week mission in December 2007, a consultant conducted a study on the
Pakistani edible oils market, focusing on olive oil. The study was mainly executed in Islamabad due to security concerns and time limitations. Unfortunately, it was not feasible to visit the regions where olive trees are cultivated, with only short visits made to Peshawar and Lahore.
