Aaron Copland, one of the most exceptional American composers, was born on November 14, 1900 in New York. He was born to Jewish immigrants from Lithuania named Sarah Mitenthal and Harris Copland and had four older siblings, Ralph, Leon, Laurine, and Josephine. His family surname was originally "Kaplan," but his father changed it to "Copland" while in England before immigrating to the United States. During his early years, he lived above and worked in his family's department store.
Despite not being directly introduced to music by his parents, Copland showed a strong inclination towards it from an early age. While helping in the store, he honed his selling skills by working in the toy department. At around seven years old, Copland's cousin introduced him to the phonograph, which became a source of fascination and led him to spend hours lis
...tening to records.
In 1911, Aaron requested his sister, Laurine, to teach him piano and after persistent pressure she agreed. By the age of fifteen, he had decided to pursue a career as a composer and even completed a correspondence course in harmony writing. Later, he felt he had exhausted his sister's teaching and requested his parents to send him to a professional teacher. He began learning from Ludwig Wolfshon, his first professional piano teacher in Brooklyn in 1914.
At the age of sixteen, Copland travelled to Manhattan to receive private instruction from Rubin Goldmark, a highly respected teacher who taught him the essentials of composition and counterpoint. Copland devoted himself to immersing in music, regularly attending performances at venues such as the New York Symphony and Brooklyn Academy of Music. Later, in 1921, Copland
departed for France to attend the newly established music school for Americans at Fontainebleau, where he became the first American to study under the exceptional composer..
