'But what if I want to be a 'geek'? With the television show Beauty and the Geek coming up later this week, I think it's important to talk about how societal stereotypes affect students' opportunities. Terms like 'geek' often have negative meanings attached to them, particularly when it comes to subjects like Information Computer technology (ICT).'
Can stereotypes really discourage students from pursuing desired subjects and careers? It seems they can, and already do. Despite the increasing job opportunities in IT-related fields, studies have revealed that students are avoiding subjects like ICT due to its negative image as a 'boring subject' with no interesting applications, only attracting 'geeks' (Graham 2003, p 322). This has led to around a 50% decline in students completing ICT for their HSC, despite a 7% growth in related job prospect
...s. The reason behind this decline is likely the perception that those who engage with ICT are socially inadequate and isolated, deterring many students from getting involved with technology (Schott 2000, p 291). However, this stigma has been proven incorrect, as research shows that students who are highly interested in ICT are just as sociable, popular, and self-assured as their peers who do not use ICT (Schott 2000, p 291).
The text highlights how issues related to young women refraining from choosing male-dominated subjects stem from social associations and gender stereotypes that still persist today. Consequently, labels and stereotypes surrounding students' academic choices significantly impact their final decisions, leading them to forgo pursuing subjects of interest and potentially preventing them from pursuing their dream careers.
