The responsibilities of a registered nurse encompass teaching, administering, supervising, delegating, and evaluating nursing practice. These duties are guided by the standards established for the registered nurse's role in implementing the nursing process and as a member of the nursing profession. These standards necessitate registered nurses to possess knowledge in their work, consistently choose the best approach, and make informed decisions.
An advanced practice nurse is a certified registered nurse who specializes in a specific field under the board of nursing's chapter. Certifications available for advanced practice nurses include certified registered nurse anesthetist, clinical nurse specialist, certified nurse-midwife, and certified nurse practitioner. Additionally, nurse practitioners must acquire prescriptive authority that grants them permission to prescribe medication. For new graduates aspiring to obtain a nursing license, the initial step involves submitting an application for licensure.
To obtain a nursing
license, applicants must meet the requirements of an approved nursing education program set by either the board or another regulatory jurisdiction. The application should contain all the requested information. According to Section 4723.08 of the revised code, there is a fee that needs to be paid when submitting the application. Furthermore, starting from June 1, 2003, background checks are mandatory for all applications. If it is found that someone has committed fraud in order to pass the licensure exam, their nursing license may be revoked, suspended, or denied by the board.
If a nurse is found guilty of engaging in the illegal sale, distribution, or use of drugs or therapeutic devices for non-therapeutic purposes, their license may be suspended or revoked. To renew a two-year license, nurses must complete 24 hours of continuing nursing education. Among these required hours, at least one must be dedicated to studying the statutes and rules that regulate nursing practice in this state. The laws and regulations governing nursing schools can be accessed in Section 4723.07.
Section 4723.07 outlines the various procedures and precautions that must be taught to ensure proper sanitation and cleanliness, including the handling and disposal of needles and other sharp instruments, as well as the wearing and disposal of gloves and other protective garments and devices.
