Other than that, we also ask for their opinion and what they hope to get from their workplace, or what are their feeling
working there This study was carried out in McDonaldâs workers located at Melaka. We went to McDonaldâs restaurant at Jaya Jusco and Dataran Pahlawan one time to distribute the survey form and collected after they finish fill up. The workers who took part in our survey form were 34 people include supervisors, manager, cookers, cashier and waiter. They are also few of foreign worker which came from Nepal. The survey was took when the worker is on their break time cause we try not to interrupt their work.
They were 2 McDonald restaurant that been choose to make our survey, and we did 20 worker from the malaka mall, ayer keroh and 14 from the one dataran phalawan, Melaka raya. Before distribute the survey form, we will ask the permission from the branch manager to ask whether can let their workers to fill up questionnaire the manager of the McDonald are also kindly to allow us to do survey to his and her worker and all worker are thanked for answering our questionnaire. The questionnaire are set in simple English for those worker who didnât get high education and some of it never been to school before. Total 15 question are set for the survey and most of it is objective, it is to ensure we donât take too much time from worker to avoid interrupt their break and give them a troublesome work time. But there is couple of question is subjective to ask for their opinion too.
The front part of the survey is to collect some general information like about age, gender and ethnicity. The middle part covered information of their work like salary
and work time. The last part will be opinion about themselves as a worker and suggestion. After the data from the questionnaire was collected and analyze, frequency count and percentages of data were compute and tabulated. Some information also obtain from the web which from about my job.
com to find out couple of unsatisfied worker complain about their work place. And mcspotlight. com were Mcdonald worker to staind up for their right and complain. From there we generally know some opinion of worker to the company. Especially from the negative point that cause them unhappy and then become demotivaed at work.
FINDINGCHART 1 : working hour of McDonald workers We would like to analyze on their working hour first because the time of might be one of the reason to the demotivation of worker Working hour| Number of worker| percantage| 1 to 4| 2| 5. 88%| 5 to 8| 12| 35. 29%| 9 to 12| 16| 47. 05%| More than 12| 4| 11. 76%| Work as full time| Number of workers| Yes | 28| No | 6| TABLE 1 : FULL OR PART TIMER From the chart 1 it shows working hour of the worker of McDonald, we can see that most of the worker are working for between 9 to 12 hours and that is 16 people which (47%) of people from the worker collected.Followed by worker who work 5 to 8 hours with 12 people(35%).
And there is oni 2 person work for 1 to 4 hours and 4 person work more than 12 hours. Other than that, from table 1, there is total of 28 workers work as full time and 6
of them are not. From what we notice, workers spend quite lot of time for their work and worker who work more than 12 hours are all foreign workers or supervisor. CHART 2 : salary income of McDonald workers Salary income| Number of workers| Percentage| Less than RM300| 0| 0%| RM300 to RM600| 17| 50%| RM600 to RM900| 11| 32. 35%| More than RM900| 6| 17. 64%|The chart/graph above shows the salary income of the McDonald workers.
According to the 2nd chart, most of the workers receive RM300 to RM600 per month for their salary which is 17 workers (50%) . And only 6 worker (17. 64%) have more than RM900 for their salary and they are all work as supervisor in the restaurant. These low salary might be the reason which make them demotivated. This is normal in the study of philosophy because people donât feel like work hard for such low pay.
From what we know that worker at McDonald have many of rule and regulation to follow which make their job harder.CHART 3 : purpose of working Purpose of working| Number of workers| Percentage| General income| 17| 50%| Family support| 12| 35. 29%| Extra pocket money| 3| 8. 82%| Work experience| 2| 5. 88%| Chart 3 shows the purpose of workers work at the McDonald restaurant.
Most of the worker which is 17 people (50%) work there is because it as the general income. And 12 (35. 29%) of them work to support their family. And itâs only 2 (5. 88%) of them are for the work experience. From here we can see that most of the just work for the money
instead for learning, experience or try something new.
hese kind of worker will have a attitude which they just want to go back home faster after they start work, not to do their job with all their best. CHART 4 : how long are they planning to work at McDonald Time workers plan to work| Number of workers| percantage| Less than 3 month| 16| 47. 05%| 3 to 6 month| 5| 14. 71%| 7 to 12 month | 9| 26. 47%| More than 1 year| 4| 11.
76%| According to the chart 4, we can see that most of the workers are just planning to work at McDonald for not more than 3 month which is 16 people out of 34 (47. 05%).Besides that, only 4 (11. 76%) of them planning to work more than 1 year. This show that the turnover in the Mcdonald are high due to the rapid change of worker in their restaurant. This will cause waste of human resource cause the worker attend to quit their job after they learned the skill and knowledge from McDonald, then McDonald have need to hire a new worker and train them from the beginning again.
In fact, worker will not put any effort in their job if they just want to work there temporary cause it will be just a waste of time for them. SUMMARYAccording to the result made, it can roughly see that what is the reason why workers at McDonald are demotivated. It can be deduced that the worker have spend quite a long time working in the restaurant. Plus the tied rule and regulation in the fast food restaurant,
they are not able to talk ,chill or loitering during their work time cause they have to be fast. This mean they are really spend their working hour just for working. Most of the workers also work as full time, this will make the worker more frustrated due to the long hour of focus on job with no rest.
Good thing about McDonald is they use workshift system which you just gone tru all the hard time juz for a couple of hour not the whole day. They either work shift in morning, afternoon or night. The salary of the worker also are very low. All the worker are working too hard for what they are paying for. As the well known famous fast food restaurant they should pay more to their every worker. This might motivate the worker to be more commited to their job.
Other than survey we also find out from the internet that worker at other country also work very hard and got low paid. From the purpose of work it shows most of the people work for support family and as a general income and few are for earn extra money and experience. It can be summarize that most worker will work at McDonald for long time cause people donât change job often if they wan to get a stable income. So,they might probably get very boring if doing the job for long time. Beside that, we also ask those workers what benefit they get working in McDonald(structure).
Other than no, most of the benifit they think is the free meal that provide to them. And the most 2nd and 3rd goes
to âcan learn more about McDonaldâ and âgain more working experienceâ.Even though these free meal seems like a benifit to them, but indirectly, if consume too much fast food will affect the health of workers slowly. Oily food also will make them feeling sleepy and tired, cause them hard to get in full attention in working. For another question of asking workers opinion what should McDonald do to make them more motivate to work(structure), we found out most of them have no comment. They said it is totally degrading and dehumanising, there is a âprocedure' for every tiny action to make their role almost completely robotic.
CONCLUSIONBased from the survey we have conducted, the information we gathered were generally shown that, the McDonaldâs workers were de-motivated to work because, their working condition require a tied and strict rule. Since they are working in a fast-food industry they have to do their work in a fast pace so that they can provide their services on time. For that reason, the workers also, must be on time every time they start work and have little conversation with other workers. Besides than having little time for themselves, they also do not have time for their friends and family too.In their mind, what they only think was âTime is money and money means more time to spend on workingâ. The little time they were given, they have to juggle on to spend on three important things in their life.
This somehow, will definitely create a stress to the workers and in fact, at the same time it will only create a low productivity to the workers performance. Furthermore, the
workers feel that, even though they work really hard, there are no extra incentives or bonuses for them. There is nothing, a strong sense of purpose that can drive them to be more productive and better rather han to work to support their life and family. They feel the only purpose they are working is because they are strictly tied the chain with responsibilities and commitment. Therefore, in order to eliminate or minimize the overall performance of de-motivated workers, McDonaldâs main company should analyze thoroughly the problems so that they could overcome the problems earlier and prevent the problems from becoming more complicated in the future as there is a proverb says that, âprevention is better than cureâ. RECOMMENDATION The key to success in any businesses is to produce a quality and productive employees.
In order to do so, by finding ways to increase employees output and productivity, it can help to ensure a smoother, more profitable business operation. There are many ways to do this, starting from forming a good and healthier working environment to handling out the employees. As for McDonaldâs workers there are a few ways for their manager, to be considering in improving and increasing their workers productivity. The first step is to start with a good and healthier working atmosphere. Since, the nature of the work requires a physical strength, it is recommended to create a pleasant working environment for McDonaldâs workers.
By piping in relaxing music, and managerâs making a point of spending time throughout the day with their workers can encourage an open-door policy which can create workers feel connected to the upper management. A more relaxed work atmosphere can
help create employees more likely to work harder. Besides than that, it is recommended for McDonaldâs managerâs to offer some bonuses to their workers who are performing well in their work. By offering a bonus to those workers who set and achieve specific monthly goals is one way to increase workers productivity. It is also an effective way of rewarding those workers who deserve the extra reward.
The bonuses can be in the form of anything from monetary form to paid time off. The last or not least, in order to increase productivity in the workplace, it is recommended for McDonaldâs managerâs to give positive feedback and the need for the workers to know that they are appreciated for their hard work . As simple as a verbal praise for a job well done or a genuine expression of gratitude can go a long way. Other methods of positive feedback include praising a worker in front of others, sending a letter of recognition or giving an award of appreciation. An employee who feels appreciated is likely to increase the level of output in the workplace.
