The creation of awareness and empowerment through economic activity is a key strategy for improving the living conditions of the people in Navaho constituency, Eastern roving, Kenya. To achieve this, community leaders will educate the population on topics such as better agriculture, income generating activities, and the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. Additionally, a VS will be constructed to provide counseling, testing, and medication. The ADSTAR university location is home to a diverse community with small entrepreneurship businesses and peasant farming as the main economic activities. However, poverty and unemployment have led to the lowest primary school enrollment rate in the area. Water scarcity due to low annual rainfall causes low crop production and poor yields, leading to diseases such as malaria, eye, ear, skin infections that are common among both infected and affected individuals with HIV/AIDS.
The population i
...n this area faces multiple challenges to accessing proper healthcare, including limited access to home-based care services, stigma, and inadequate healthcare facilities. The only available clinic serves ADSTAR University students under the medical cover program, with only one doctor, two nurses, and three clinical officers. The lack of public awareness regarding responsible sexual behavior and family planning makes the community vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS. The primary problem is that despite multiple prevention campaigns, ignorance and poverty contribute to the continued high transmission rates. Poverty can force individuals to engage in risky sexual behaviors to feed their families or due to drug intoxication. Additionally, peer pressure among students leads to the spread of STIs through multiple partners.Due to stigma and discrimination, lack of voluntary counseling and training centers, and limited access to protectio
measures like condoms, many individuals are infected with HIV and suffering from illness and weakness. Poverty further compounds these challenges by making it difficult to afford ARV medication and necessary opportunistic infection treatments. The goal of this project is to decrease the mortality and morbidity rates for persons living with HIV/AIDS by providing increased training and counseling to both infected and affected individuals within the ADSTAR University community. This holistic approach will foster community participation, development, and economic growth with a targeted completion date of August 30th, 2013. The objectives of the project are to increase knowledge about HIV/AIDS transmission, improve communication skills, promote positive attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS, and introduce counseling centers in ADSTAR University by August 30th, 2013. The project also aims to enhance self-sustainability among people living with HIV/AIDS by providing income-generating activities such as picture-taking, tree planting, poultry rearing, fish farming, and business training courses within ADSTAR University community. The aim of the project is to decrease the spread of HIBAITS and increase support for those affected in the ADSTAR University community by August 30th, 2013. This will be achieved through various activities, including the formation of self-help groups for those affected, counseling and training on family planning to reduce mother to child transmissions, training for caregivers and leaders on how to support people living with HIBAITS, and improved health care to reduce infant and mortality rates and the number of HIVE orphans. The project will target HIBAITS patients (both adult and children), orphans, pregnant women, and ADSTAR University students.HIBAITS outreaches partner with various organizations and health workers to provide educative and informative programs at churches, schools, and through trainers.
Training of trainers is also offered to ensure home visits and individual follow-ups for people living with HIBAITS through home based care services. To promote sustainability and enable access to drugs, income generating activities like farming are organized for HIBAITS groups, facilitated by outsourced facilitators from the agricultural sector and business related firms with the help of project organizers. Orphans affected and infected by HIBAITS receive care and support through counseling programs from a psychological counselor, while a social worker monitors their school attendance. Families and pregnant women receive testing programs by trained HCI workers. Church and institutional leaders are trained to disseminate information and create awareness on HIDES related issues. A budget activity includes the construction of a counseling center and provision of reading materials such as HIBAITS booklets. The total budget for the project includes 100,000 for transport, 1 o,oho for purchasing drugs, 250,000 for maintenance and expansion of the center, as well as monitoring and evaluation and miscellaneous costs. It is important to note that the community will contribute by reviving raw materials like sand and stones, and providing unskilled labor to transport raw materials and work at the site. In addition, local leaders (men, women and youth representatives) will educate the community on the benefits of better healthcare to save on hiring medical experts and create a sense of ownership among community members. Implementation of the project will involve providing public education and training programs to promote knowledge on HIBAITS infection, communication skills and developing a positive attitude towards care and support towards HIVE patients. The project co-ordinating committee will identify respected local leaders to volunteer as care providers through community participatory
processes in community Barajas and meetings. The project will train identified volunteers in home-based care and supervise them during field visits and community monitoring and evaluation. A qualified counselor will facilitate group therapies at the project center. Trainings, seminars, and workshops will be conducted by the project team with assistance from external facilitators. The constructed HCI will offer services such as testing, counseling, and the collection and distribution of ARV drugs. The engineer, along with the doctor, ministry of public health, and project directors, will supervise construction, with the need to hire eight workers and the community to contribute unskilled labor. The project is set to last from October 30th, 2012 to August 30th, 2013. Risks include lack of community involvement leading to limited cooperation and dependency syndrome, and potential delays due to the election year in Kenya.
Due to minimal rainfall, the project is striving to optimize the limited precipitation to plant crops during this season. Consequently, this delay will inflate the project's expenses and extend their completion timeline. Moreover, economic inflation may decrease the value of the dollar, thereby increasing commodity prices beyond the predetermined estimates.
To ensure sustainability beyond the funding period, the project members will establish a revolving fund. This approach will encourage entrepreneurship and enable access to healthcare services and proper nutrition for those infected or affected by their activities. Additionally, the project can accommodate external facilitators seamlessly, while stakeholders such as hospitals, educational institutions, churches, and constituency aids control committees can donate goods and services, funds, and provide leadership support.
The project committee aims to ensure and encourage collective management systems, where all members can participate in planning, decision-making, evaluation,
and experience sharing. Community members who will benefit from the project will also be involved in monitoring and evaluation processes. External monitoring and evaluation experts will be sought after to assist in the quarterly monitoring process. Small group discussions will aid in reviewing past project operations and planning for the following period. The results of monitoring meetings will be used to improve future planning. Project evaluation is crucial for measuring relevance, effectiveness, and goal achievement. Resource persons may be invited to evaluate both short and long term program effects.
The monitoring and evaluation process will include comparing health facility data with the number of children who die before reaching the age of five, as well as conducting interviews to assess the impact of economic activities. It is important to evaluate not only the direct beneficiaries within the ADSTAR University community, but also those who benefit indirectly. Lessons learned from the strengths and weaknesses of this project should be applied to future project planning, programming, and implementation.
