Research Background: Humans immigrate to one country from another country because of a number of reasons. Sometimes they are forced to immigrate due to conflict or to avoid persecution, while sometimes they simply move for better prospects. Such movement of people in large numbers causes many problems. Immigration to the UK since 1922 has been mainly from former colonies of the British Empire like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa, Kenya, Honk Kong. People from these countries immigrated to UK under the British Nationality Law.
Many other people immigrated to UK as asylum seekers under the United Nations 1951 Refugee convention. Still some emigrated from the European Union (EU) member countries through one of the EU’s Four Freedoms. Foreign immigrants arrive at the rate of half a million per year or in oth
...er words nearly one immigrant per minute. The net immigration in UK during the year 2008 was 163000. About half the population increase in UK between 1991-2001 census was due to foreign immigration. The main focus in this proposal will be to consider the economic and social impact of immigration to UK. The various economic benefits to UK will be studied and the social impact on UK’s society will also be analyzed.
The main objective of this proposal is to compare the advantages and disadvantages of immigration to UK and then conclude whether immigration is a boon or curse for UK. I would like to carry out STEP analysis and try to focus on impact of economical and social factors on immigration in UK. Having seen the huge number of immigrants every year to UK from all over the world and seeing the various problems faced
by the local people in UK, it was a known fact that the Blair Government was going to be in trouble. This proposal will provide some recommendations for controlling immigration in UK. This proposal is interesting because no such work is ever done in detail. 3. Rationale:
The researcher is an immigrant herself who came to UK on a student visa. She had right to work 20 hours per week. She worked in Tamu Tamu Restaurant located in Queensbury, UK for two days upon her arrival. As she was not aware of the rules, she was paid a mere two pound per hour. But she came to know of the minimum wage rate of 5. 8 pounds set by the UK Government. She felt exploited and thought why do people come to UK? Her friends had no other option but to continue work there because living costs in UK were very high. The researcher thought why is the living costs so high? Immigrants are ready to do any kind of work in UK whereas back home they used to have preferences.
Work like nursing, catering, working in stores, cleaning homes for such low wages is done by many people. This intrigued her even more. This issue of immigration is indeed an enigma which she wants to solve through her proposal. Immigration is a global issue. Its effects are seen by countries like USA, Canada and Australia too. But the impact of immigration on UK is tremendous because of many reasons. Firstly, the resources in UK are very limited. Its geographical area is not as much as other countries. Too many people coming to UK is congesting the
area. Secondly, the UK government did not take any preemptive steps to curb this problem. They should have limited the number of visas to be issued in various categories.
The local people had to face many problems due to immigration and as a result the Labor Party had to face the consequences in 2010 elections. This proposal can be used by the government of UK to solve the problems of immigration. This research discusses the economic benefits to UK through immigration. It also studies the social problems of immigration. But apart from discussing the facts and the problems, this research paper aims to provide valuable insight into the root cause and then provide suggestions to improve the present scenario of immigration in UK. It is expected from students of Business management to have an insight of academic proposals. The researcher is a business student.
Hence she is carrying out this proposal. This proposal will open a world of academic research into the challenges of immigration. 4. Research Objectives Few objectives were identified during the research. The study will help to understand the social problems caused by immigration in UK. It will state the economical benefits achieved through immigration. This proposal will guide the government of UK and the students in the field of problems of immigration and also propose some suggestions to overcome it. Some research objectives are mentioned below: ? To analyze the economic benefits of immigration to UK. ? To analyze the social impact immigration had on UK’s society. To locate the reasons behind the economic benefits and social evils of immigration in UK. ? To find out what can be done to increase the
economic benefits without having an increase in social evils. 5. Research question: This research is mainly focusing on few of the research question as mentioned below: ? What are the economic benefits to UK of immigration? ? What are the social demerits faced by UK society due to immigration? ? Have any strategies been formulated to handle the immigration problem? ? How the issue of immigration changed the political scenario in UK? ? How to solve the problem of immigration in UK? 6. Literature Review: There are some research papers on the grave issue of immigration in UK.
Some of them discuss the benefits of immigration while others discuss about the various social challenges faced by UK. But there is not much work done on the steps to be taken to curb the issues raised by immigration. This proposal aims to do all this in a single research work. The Heads Up organization in its forum which included many expert decision makers and young people discussed a wide range of views on immigration in UK. It mainly discussed on three different issues, which were: 1)can UK’s hospitals and schools cope up with more people 2) what effect immigration had on UK’s communities and 3) the affect of free movement of people in Europe on UK. (www. HeadUp. org. uk)
In the forum Beccy Allen, Manager of Hansard Society raised topics like immigrants added to the overcrowded public services such as NHS. She also mentioned that because of British people’s frustration and anger on the immigration policy of UK government, race and abuse of immigrants was done. Beccy Allen also listed some positives of immigration in UK. She
stated that many immigrants helped by working in schools and hospitals. Many immigrants did important work which ultimately helped the wider UK population. Immigrants did all kinds of work which many British people were not willing to do such as nursing, care taker, catering and working in stores. Immigrants brought with them cultural benefits from which local people can have a broader view.
Though this forum discusses many important issues related to immigration, it does not consider the economic benefits received. It does not give any suggestions to improve the social problem, nor does it give a solution to controlling the number of immigrants in UK every year. Paper released by Migration Watch UK found that the relationship between immigration and youth unemployment was positive and significant in those areas that had highest rate of immigration. The findings were based on correlation analysis and did not provide any causal relationship. It also stated that nearly 80% of new jobs went to immigrants. (www. migrationWatchUk. org)
In this paper, no discussion was done on the reason of high immigration or even on the skill level of youth who were unemployed and on the skill level of immigrants who ultimately got the job. Dr Heaven Crawley, Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) said “The economic benefit of immigration into the UK is overall very clear-it boosts GDP. The economic benefits are significantly higher than the costs. However, the question is the balance between the definite economic benefits and the other connected issues such as the social impact, and the additional strain on public services. This balance is the issue. ”(www. bbc. co. uk) In his work there is no
discussion on the social impact and the economic advantages of immigration to UK. There is no suggestion as to how to control the high numbers of immigrants.
Sir Andrew Green, Chairman of Migration Watch UK said, “look at cutting the number of migrants from non-EU countries because nothing can be done about the eastern Europeans as they are members of the EU and their numbers are likely to decline as the level of these economies come up. Three quarters of migrants come from the rest of the world. ”(www. bbc. co. uk) But before making such a blunt statement, Sir Andrew did not take into account the huge amount of revenue generated by the so called ‘rest of the world’. He did not consider what effects will result if the number of migrants to UK are reduced without a proper plan. Obviously, proper strategy has to be formulated before taking such a step. Otherwise, it will mar the UK economy.
According to James Hamsphire and Shamit Saggar, University of Sussex, “The July 7, 2005, suicide bombings in London’s transport system were carried out mainly by men born and raised in the UK. But all of the bombers were brought up in immigrant-descended communities while several of the July 21 would-be bombers were naturalized citizens who originally came to Britain as asylum seekers. ”(www. migrationinformation. org) This article has no evidence of the information provided in it. But from the overall facts we can say that migration control, asylum and admission to citizenship are all interconnected and must be analyzed thoroughly. 7. Methodology: 7. 1 Research Design:-
Exploratory studies are a valuable means of finding out ‘what is happening;
to seek new insights; to ask questions and to assess phenomena in a new light’ (Robson, 1993: 42). It is particularly useful if one needs to clarify understanding of a problem. It is flexible and adaptable to change. It is unstructured. No decision making is needed. In the end, more research can be carried out. This research strategy suited the research proposal and hence was adapted (Saunders et al, 1997). 7. 2 Data Collection method:- Data used was secondary in nature. The use of primary data such as interviews, questionnaires was planned but could not be executed because of shortage of time.
The researcher lacks experience in the proper designing of questionnaires and also in following the correct structure of interview. The usage of secondary data is less time consuming and cheap. Hence secondary data from the Internet was used. Internet has a vast source of journals, articles and published papers. 7. 3 Data Analysis:- Data analysis is a procedure where important things are noted from data collected. The concept is analyzed and understood properly and then data is reordered in a logical way (Kotler, 2010). After data collection, it has to be checked whether the collected data is reliable or not. It does not matter whether the data collected is primary or secondary. For checking the validity of the data, it is observed and analyzed.
Only after checking the reliability of the data, it is used for actual decision making. This is done by qualitative analysis program. Taking into consideration various theories like Grounded theory approach by Strauss & Corbin, all the process like sampling, data collection, classification of data and data analysis are inter-related (Kotler,
2010). 8. Timeline: Gantt chart shows the highlight of particular schedule according to different task and time taken by particular task.
