Chemistry Lab properties of acids and bases Essay Example
Metal Zinc Blobbing Magnesium Fizzing Bubbling Iron Copper Reactions with Indicators Speed of Reactions With Metals Observations continued: In my observations, in data table 1, the only solution that reacted with the red litmus paper was Noah.
All three solutions reacted with the blue litmus paper; HCI and HACHURE turned the blue litmus paper red, while Noah changed the blue litmus paper to a darker, Ana color blue. HCI read a 1 on the pH scale, Acetic acid, (HACHURE) read a 2 on the pH scale, and Noah was observed as an 11 on the pH scale. For the last event in data table 1, the solution Phenolphthalein, did not react with Hydrochloric acid or Acetic acid; however it did react with Sodium Hydroxide, (Noah) turning the solution to a pink/magenta color.

In my observations in data table 2, Zinc did not react with Acetic acid, but it did seem to "blob" out of its' original form when it was exposed to Hydrochloric acid. When Magnesium reacted with both Hydrochloric acid and Acetic acid, it seemed to "fizz" in the solution, and I observed bubbles forming under and around the Magnesium. Both Iron and Copper had no reactions when the metals were exposed to HCI and HACHURE.
Conclusions: In conclusion of this lab, I observed the differing reactions that occurred between the various acids and bases that I used in my lab.
I used red, and blue litmus paper to distinguish the acids apart from the bases; but the use of the pH paper was the most reliable instrument used in my experiment to identify the acids and bases. The pH paper identified Hydrochloric
acid and Acetic acid as a 1 and a 2 on the pH scale, which states that both solutions are acids because they are lower than 7 on the pH scale. However, the pH paper measured Sodium Hydroxide as an 11 on the pH scale, which describes Noah as being a base because it is higher than 7 on the pH scale.
In my experiment, I created a hypothesis that said Phenolphthalein is an indicator of an acid because it only reacted with the base Sodium Hydroxide; and it was unreceptive with the other two acidic solutions.
Dealing with the metals, I concluded that both Zinc and Magnesium could behave as an acid or a base at any time, because they ere highly reactive when exposed to Hydrochloric acid and Acetic acid; producing bubbles with Magnesium, and deformation of the Zinc metal.
On the other hand, I believe that both Iron and Copper are neither a base or an acid, because they did not react at all when the HCI and HACHURE were present. From my experiment, Magnesium and Zinc reacted the fastest while Iron and Copper did not react at all. Hydrochloric acid is a strong acid, and it is completely dissociated in solution which makes it instantly ready to react. Meanwhile, Acetic acid is a weaker acid, which means it is not completely dissociated in solution and energy is required to dissociate it; which takes it longer to react.
