In a time when the US should be at the forefront dealing with environmental pollution, it is still a surprise that acid rain still exists even with the EPA regulations. Acid rain is any form rain that falls below the consideration of the standard pH precipitate below 5.6. This is because of the natural relatively acidic condition of rain water (Errecart, 2005). In Vermont there are still evident traces of acidity of pH between 4.2 and 4.4 and, in the extremes, recorded has ranged from 2.4 to 7.4. This has been evident because of the destructions of the statue stones and also gravestones in Vermont.

What are the causes of this acid rain? Are the EPA regulations not impacting? One may already ask. Well, this is from factories, homes, and vehicles. Statistics reveal that the massive coal-fired power plants i

n the neighboring Ohio that emit sulfur dioxide and form rain. This ends up in the lakes in Vermont and has rendered most of Vermont's sensitive lakes acidic, more so, those found in the remote and undeveloped parts of the Green Mountains and small portions in the Northeast Kingdom (Errecart, 2005). EPA should know better that the highly sensitive aquatic clams like the crayfish which depends directly on calcium, is facing extinction. More sensitive fish like the rainbow trout are soon being phased off and even species of frogs and aquatic insects like the mayfly. More mosses have grown and even the water changing its color. Lakes is beginning to look more transparent and without interventions the general population is in danger.

An appeal to the EPA is that more policy should be added to the existing aci

rain program. More personal awareness on energy, efficiency in fuel and even cars is highly recommended. Eco friendly Alternatives like wind or solar energy to the coal driven power plants should be advocated and strict use of catalytic converters in the coal industries in Ohio. Further recommendation is that there should be a global joining to fight for safety because more places around the globe face this life threat just like Vermont.
