Advertising has consumed the world. Even individuals have transformed into walking billboards. To confirm this, simply look down at your shirt, where you will likely find an advertisement or logo for the shirt's designer. Some fortunate individuals may have even had the opportunity to pose next to the Coca-Cola box in their senior pictures. Large corporations have saturated the planet with advertisements, utilizing various mediums such as television, radio, billboards, newspapers, and the internet. These companies incessantly bombard you with sales pitches, captivating visuals, and the notorious fine print. Billions of dollars are spent annually on advertising, but for what purpose? The oldest form of advertising, billboards, now adorn every major highway and heavily trafficked road. During long car trips, these colossal works of art provided a source of enter
...tainment for me as a child. They momentarily diverted my attention away from the tiresome road. After straining my eyes to read every word before it vanished behind me, fatigue would set in and I would soon drift off to sleep. Only radio advertisements had the power to stir me from this deep slumber. The comforting rhythm of any song would abruptly be interrupted by a loud and irritating voice enthusiastically promoting new donuts at Honey Dew or a big sale at the mall. Radio used to be wonderful until advertising took control. Previously, one could enjoy 24 hours of uninterrupted music. Now, it is considered fortunate if you can enjoy uninterrupted songs for 40 minutes, and surprisingly, this is advertised as an extra benefit. Advertising firms excel in seizing control of new mediums to display their ads and logos. This is evident on television, where commercials
have proliferated throughout networks. Although a typical comedy sitcom is scheduled for a 30-minute time slot, only about 17 minutes are dedicated to the actual show. The remaining 13 minutes are filled with commercials. Consequently, the television program you are watching is on for slightly over half the time indicated in the TV Guide. Adding to the annoyance, during those 17 minutes of actual television viewing, there is a persistent company logo watermark in one corner of the screen. If you are frustrated and feeling rebellious, and considering boycotting cable television, do not seek solace in wasting time on the Internet. Upon going online, most users immediately check their emails, which unfortunately become a prime target for advertisements. When was the last time you checked your email, received a letter from a company promoting their new software, and actually felt compelled to purchase it? It is called junk mail for a reason. Getting the same email advertisement 50 times is even worse. Companies have yet to grasp the subtle art of advertising. Their ambitions do not stop at infiltrating your mailbox; they also aim to disrupt your web browsing experience. Each page displays banners across the heading or annoying pop-up ads, making it difficult for users to access the actual content they are searching for. The distinction between experienced Internet users and beginners lies in their ability to navigate websites effectively. Bombarding us with advertisements from every possible angle is not beneficial. In fact, it has become a nuisance that most consumers dislike. Continuously annoying customers with ads can lead to a loss of support for a company. While advertisements are inevitable, it would be more
effective and enjoyable if they entertained us, such as the Budweiser frogs or the got milk series. Providing entertainment would leave a positive impression on users and enhance their internet browsing experience instead of interrupting their music or television.
