Consequently, countries such as Germany and France doubled the size of their military forces which sparked an arms race. The competition aimed to determine which country would have the largest armed forces for a potential large-scale conflict. Each nation sought to showcase their military might, resulting in a general sense of apprehension that other nations may initiate attacks.
Forming alliances, they combined their forces resulting in mutual benefits.
