This study examines a specific aspect of change in the context of administration.

The selected administration is Amnesty International Ireland, a non-governmental organization that focuses on human rights. With over 3 million members and participants worldwide, I will provide an introduction to AI, including information about its members, actions, initiatives, and goals. In this text, we will specifically discuss a case study and the challenges facing the organization. Additionally, I will focus on one aspect of organizational change currently occurring within Amnesty International. The Amnesty International Council has adopted a strategic plan for the next six years.

The AI's integrated strategic program from 2010 to 2016 encompasses 18 subjects aimed at achieving various goals. One aspect of this program focuses on strategic communication, which is a part of the overall Amnesty organizational scheme known as "Moving Closer to the Land". To effectively

analyze this aspect, interviews were conducted with representatives from the UCC Amnesty International society and the local Amnesty International group of Cork City.

AI has several functions related to this problem, such as communicating with individuals, facilitating communication between organization members, enabling communication between local groups, and engaging with younger generations. To comprehend the process of change occurring within AI, I will use the alteration Kaleidoscope. Subsequently, I will illustrate the changes happening in Amnesty International based on feedback from both groups. These changes primarily focus on effective communication. Lastly, I will provide various recommendations to help Amnesty International anticipate the context of change.

attorney Peter Benenson (1921-2005), is a global NGO that aims to promote respect for human rights. Its main goal is to advocate for all human rights established in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, signed by numerous countries in 1948. The organization's headquarters are located in London and it has over 3 million activists spread across 150 countries. Currently, Salil Shetty serves as the Secretary General.

Amnesty International, established on October 1, 1962, is dedicated to exposing human rights violations and increasing awareness of mistreatment worldwide. The organization's goals encompass promoting fair legal processes, aiding refugees, eradicating torture and disappearances, and advocating for the liberation of prisoners of conscience. In 1977, Amnesty International received the Nobel Peace Prize. It remains independent from government entities, political ideologies, and religious beliefs. Amnesty International does not support or oppose any specific government or political system nor does it endorse or reject the perspectives of the victims whose rights it strives to safeguard. Its sole commitment lies in impartially protecting human rights. The organization tackles cases from various nations without prioritizing its own country.

Amnesty International's goal is to abolish the death penalty and ensure that national laws align with international human rights standards. They also prioritize protecting refugees from being returned to countries where they may face torture, execution, or captivity due to their beliefs.

Amnesty International envisions a world where everyone enjoys the human rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other global standards. To achieve this vision, they conduct research and take action to prevent and address severe abuses of rights such as physical and mental well-being, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination.

The

funding for Amnesty International's activities primarily comes from associate members rather than governments. They do not seek or accept government funds for their work in documenting and campaigning against human rights violations.

Amnesty International Ireland, which has a membership of over 15,000 individuals and supporters, is the largest organization advocating for homosexual rights in the country. The organization strives to remain unbiased.

Case Diagnosis

The Amnesty International Council has introduced a strategic initiative called the AI's integrated strategic plan 2010 to 2016. This program includes 18 distinct themes that align with their future objectives.

This comprehensive strategic program involves change procedures used to analyze. Within this program, the organizational scheme of Amnesty is collected, including its plan "Moving Closer to the Land". This plan represents one of the most radical changes to how Amnesty International operates that has ever been agreed upon by the movement. Through this plan, Amnesty aims to become more engaged with local communities where human rights can make a tangible difference in people's lives. As part of this strategy, Amnesty intends to mobilize people and resources, bringing them closer to those who are trying to help, with reduced staff and resources at its Secretariat in London.

There are various alteration procedures related to the concept of "Moving closer to the land," such as effective communication, efficient regulation, connecting local and global aspects, investing in volunteers, staff, leadership and systems, building new constituencies, and renewing membership. I will focus on one aspect of organizational change taking place in Amnesty International, which is included in their program - effective communication.

Communicating effectively:

The ability to effectively communicate, persuade, and inspire people's action is crucial to the implementation of human rights

programs. Amnesty International needs to communicate its agenda on the covered topics, explain and advocate for issues in a way that is understandable and accessible to rights holders, partners, members, and supporters. Amnesty International Ireland currently faces challenges in relation to the mentioned issues.

According to both the UCC society and the Cork local group, there are issues with communication regarding the action policy. The UCC society is not aware of the ISP (Integrated Strategic Plan 2010 to 2016) and lacks close connection with the central offices. Additionally, the company does not have a policy agenda from Amnesty International, but rather presents arguments on the death penalty to express their perspective.

Many immature people lack the ability to articulate their thoughts effectively. They may attempt to talk about various topics, but they fail to consider the overall guidelines or conventions that should be adhered to. The AI Cork, for instance, has no knowledge about global political affairs concerning Amnesty International. Although the local coordinator obtains information from the national convention in Dublin, they are not truly aware of the issues at hand despite holding the role of local coordinator.

The majority of orders for the group are received directly from Dublin, including great runs, actions, and other activities. It is not important for the local group to be knowledgeable about global politics as everything is centralized in Dublin. Additionally, most events take place in Dublin.

No connection between UCC society and AI Cork. Unknown society meetings are held. UCC society is connected to Dublin, where there is a construction dedicated to the pupils, but not many meetings with the organization. Very occasionally there are meetings in Galway, but normally

it is in Dublin.

Dublin holds the power as the central hub, a concept accepted by the Cork group due to the necessity of hierarchy in a large organization to achieve positive outcomes. Over the past few years, there has been a shift in the organizational dynamics, resulting in increased communication with the coordinator in Galway rather than Dublin.

However, the majority of the information they receive is delivered by Dublin, but they do not discuss the subjects that truly interest them. They encounter difficulty in communicating with people. Both groups utilize social media for communication, yet they face challenges.

Cork local group uses Facebook but not Twitter. Their Facebook group is specifically for internal members, as they want to prevent too much spam or individuals posting in the name of AI without being affiliated with AI. UCC society is more active on social media, but one potential issue is that the society does not have a website. Therefore, it is appropriate for them to only use Twitter and Facebook. The society also encounters difficulties with mobile connection. Additionally, the society is connected with other AI student groups, although this connection is occasional.

They don't organize events throughout Ireland. Another concern for both groups in the field of Effective Communication is to engage more people in Amnesty International issues and inspire future generations to generate new ideas. Currently, AI requires new members with innovative ideas to enhance communication and create a new action agenda that is clear, easy to comprehend, and universally understood.

Methodology

In order to comprehend the context of change, regarding effective communication, which Amnesty International is implementing, I will employ the kaleidoscope approach.

This is a construct that we

studied in category. The kaleidoscope alteration is a diagnostic model, which can be particularly useful to AI in understanding the alteration context or design choices and planning for the transition.

  • It is difficult to determine a specific starting point for this aspect of the alteration; any starting point would be acceptable.
  • The manner of change is collaborative.
  • The change process has a reinforced and involved organizational basis.
  • Most interventions would be technical, political, and some cultural in nature.
  • Good leadership and decision-making form the basis of the change process.
  • The research for this study was conducted through Interviews with representatives of UCC Amnesty International society and the local Amnesty International group of Cork City.
  • The initial information was obtained through an interview with a representative of the UCC society.

The

questions asked were:

  • Who are you? (Members, Actions, Tasks, what are you working on?)
  • Can you explain the structure of AI briefly? Specifically, where can one find their own group/society within AI?
  • Are there any coordinators or other contact individuals? How is your group/society connected with AI?
  • Is the group/society aware of the global policy (integrated strategic plan 2010 - 2016)?

AI's primary task is to communicate their action policy effectively, both globally and locally, to a diverse range of multi-lingual audiences, while maintaining a consistent global visual identity. They aim to unify their agenda for action and ensure that all members of the organization are informed about the issues being addressed. Additionally, they are increasing the number of letters sent to improve their impact.

The second area that AI is changing is communication with people. AI is using information technology, especially advanced

communications technology, to deliver messages both internally and externally through accessible communication channels. Amnesty is continuously adjusting its approach and staying ahead by taking advantage of opportunities provided by new technologies. This includes increasing research visits and the frequency of these visits. Traditional forms of communication such as letters and phone calls have shifted to telex, fax, email, and later on, social networks. Letters are being replaced by emails, which are easier and cheaper to send.

They have already organized an event where people could submit documents about a human right that they truly care about. The purpose is to collect thoughts and understand what interests people and what they truly care about. The third issue is centralisation in Dublin, and they are currently looking to hold more events in other locations such as Galway. Colm O'Gorman leads the national AI in Ireland. In 2011, he visited all local groups in Ireland to understand their concerns, problems, and projects.

This step is carried out to concentrate not only in Dublin. The last alteration procedure in relation with the subject of pass oning effectively is the alteration to attract new generations and ideas. AI is broadening the range of its audiences, particularly among young people, to engage a new generation of activists and supporters. They are creating new ways to attract new ideas through audience. AI used the fiftieth anniversary as a platform to communicate with a new generation of human rights activists.

They organized street events and parties to advocate for and mobilize society in the defense of human rights. These events aim to help people understand the importance of the fight for human rights.

Recommendations

Amnesty International needs to

make changes in its communication strategy. It needs to improve communication with individuals, communication among its members, communication with existing local groups, and communication with younger generations. There are many recommendations that can be made in this regard. These recommendations do not imply a change in the organizational structure, but rather can be implemented without any alteration to the organization. However, smaller changes such as increasing the number of decision-makers in local groups could be considered.

Recommendations for improving communication with the public include utilizing social media platforms, such as creating a public website or open Facebook group. It is also suggested to organize new events to gather people's perspectives and gain more insight into the societal issues that matter. Regarding policy communication, Amnesty should provide a detailed agenda that explains and supports the issues they stand for, in order to avoid confusion among members when addressing a particular topic. To prevent centralization of operations in Dublin and foster stronger connections with local groups, Amnesty International should involve all local groups more actively. This would include granting them more decision-making power over issues tackled by Amnesty, going beyond addressing only minor concerns or seeking opinions.

The suggestion is to organize additional events within all the local groups in Ireland so as to have a stronger influence on the decisions made by AI as a collective. Another recommendation for better communication and attracting younger generations is to create attractive events specifically for young people, where they feel comfortable and excited to learn about AI's programs and their significance for the future. Additionally, AI should increase its activity on social media platforms and create events or online advertisements in

order to appeal to the younger audience.

Internet is a useful tool for communicating with young people.

Decisions

Amnesty International, one of the largest NGOs in the world fighting for human rights, is currently undergoing a process of change. Like many organizations, it faces various problems and needs to identify its mistakes and problems in order to plan effectively for change. It also needs to consider the impact of these changes. The focus of this study was effective communication within the organization during this period of change.

Amnesty International is currently facing challenges in various areas such as communicating their agenda, interacting with members, centralizing operations, and engaging with the younger generation. Overcoming these issues and implementing long-term changes is crucial for effective communication within this NGO. If successful, these changes will have a highly positive impact on the organization. Amnesty International is actively pursuing these changes to become more efficient.
