I watched the movie Training Day. This movie shows many examples of unmoral and unethical police work. Denzel Washington is a narcotics detective for the LAPD named Alonzo Harris. His methods of enforcing the law are very questionable during the film, if not corrupt. Harris’ job is to train rookie Jake Hoyt over a 24-hour period. Many Ethical dilemmas arise for Hoyt and this presents questions for him whether or not to follow along with Harris, and if his methodology for ridding the streets in South Central Los Angeles is right or wrong.

As watching the movie we realize that there are a few theories that came up. Deontological and Teleological ethical systems as well as criminal/ moral culpability and hypothetical and categorical imperatives all were s

hown in this film. When first meeting each other the first thing Alonzo does is ask Jake for a story about a stop he has made. Jake goes on to tell a story about a dangerous stop he and a training female officer made. Alonzo has seen so much in career that it doesn’t impress him one bit. So Alonzo changes the story around and asks Jake if he had and sexual relationship with the women.

This is when Jake starts to think this is a little strange. This was the first time of them meeting and Alonzo was already trying to find out things about his corrupt side. After breakfast the two get Alonzo’s low rider and hit the streets of South Central Los Angeles. They first spot a teenage girl dealing drugs in the park. And the stop the college student buyers and instead of arrestin

the buyers Alonzo takes the drugs and lets the students go. Jake would have done the opposite in this situation before. Before long Alonzo tells Jake he has to take a hit of this marijuana.

But Jake doesn’t want to. Alonzo puts a gun to his head until he does. Alonzo says the failure to take the drug on the street could get him killed by a dealer. After smoking the marijuana Alonzo tells him that it was laced with PCP. This hypothetical question was put to the test in the movie Training Day, a movie based on ethical dilemmas involving two police officers. The deontological system states that the motivation is what matters most and the conclusion means nothing, “ The only thing that is intrinsically good is a good will. ” (33.

Pollock) Later in the movie when driving the streets Jake notices a young high school girl getting sexually attacked by two men in alley way. This first thing Jake does it jump out of the car to help her. Jake runs and beats the two men up and arrests them while Alonzo just sits in the car and observes. Alonzo then tells Jake that he refuses to report the incident. He tell the young girl to just leave and then tortures the attackers, telling him that gang members will seek for revenge. Jake noticed more corruptness of Alonzo at this time.

Alonzo and Jake then go to drug dealer Blue’s house and force him to tell him whom his supplier of drugs is or they would take him to jail. They find out that it is a man named Sandman and go

to his house and serve a fake search warrant. Alonzo goes straight to the drug money and is about to leave but then Sandman’s wife realizes the warrant was fake. Sandman’s crew comes and has a shootout with Jake and Alonzo but they were able to escape unharmed. This is very unethical situation that Alonzo came up with. It is not only invading someone’s privacy, but it is very illegal.

Categorical imperative is the “ concept that some things just must be, with no need for further justification, explanation or rationalization for they exist. ” (497 Pollock) A major incident when we see the true colors of Alonzo is when they meet a few narcotic officers at a house. They end up seize several million dollars for this man. When all the officers begin taking part of the money for themselves Jake decides not to. The officers look at him with suspicion and then Alonzo tells Jake to shoot the man. Jake refuses again and Alonzo shoots him himself.

Alonzo says that he should never say anything about this. They made the scene look like it was all self-defense. Jake says he would never go along with this plan until Alonzo says he would get his blood tested and it would show he was on PCP. Alonzo says that he would have Jake’s blood falsified in exchange for Jake’s cooperation. Jake has to agree at this point. Alonzo again urges Jake to drop his naive view of police work. Alonzo abuses his “authority, power, persuasion, and force” (187, Pollack) throughout this entire film. Jake and Alonzo move on to the gangster’s house named Smiley.

When they

get into the house Alonzo says he has to use the restroom and leaves Jake alone. Jake realizes a bit later that Alonzo has left him on his own. While on his own he figures out from Smiley that Alonzo owes the Russian MOB 1 million dollars by midnight or be killed. At the that time Jake realizes that he needs to get out but is stopped and dragged to the bathroom and a gun put up to his head. But turns out that he protected Smiley’s cousin in the alley earlier that day and was set free. Jake starts to look for Alonzo and finds him Sara’s apartment and tries to arrest him.

While this is all going on Alonzo tries and gets the crowd around him to kill Jake, offering to pay them. No one took up on the offer and just walked away. He gets away and runs to LAX and while there the Russian MOB fire at him while in his car and they kill him. Jake finally feels some relief until he turns on the news to see them saying Alonzo died while serving a warrant to a high-risk person at LAX. As watching the movie we realize that there are a few theories that came up. Deontological and Teleological ethical systems as well as criminal/ moral culpability and hypothetical and categorical imperatives all were shown in this film.
