What were some of the key problems facing the United States and the Early Republic following independence?
After independence United States and the early Republican faced numerous problems which include; financial crisis, weak political systems, legislative inefficiencies, racism and anti-Semitism, foreign policy, National expansion and reform, health care issues, economic disorder, civil wars and reconstruction among others (Janos and Barrington 308).Of all the problems faced early Republic after the revolution, slavery posed a significant threat to the infant America nation. Financial crisis struck the country after the revolution in the 1790s as the new government sought ways of maintaining their debt and standard of living. The economy was in shambles when the fight ended in 1781.The influx of cheap British manufactured products sold more than American made goods thus worsening the economy. Americans were divided on the
ways of dealing with fiscal problems that plagued the new government. One faction, led by Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of the Treasury, suggested that the federal government should take vigorous actions by increasing taxes and tariffs on certain products manufactured in the US but another group led by Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State, were disagreeing with government involvement in economic affairs. Jefferson later agreed with Hamilton proposal. Regulation of Financial crisis was one of the vital problem facing the US and early republic. State legislatures passed a range of favorable laws met political controversy as it outraged people who were expected to be paid by debtors.
During the 1970s, a young United States republic was encountered with the problem of establishment of machinery government and Weak political systems. After the revolutionary war, Americans wanted the government to overthrow the British regimes
The governance was formed according to the articles of confederation which was proposed during Second Continental Congress in 1777 in Philadelphia (Rakove 45). These articles did not organize a central government nor did they generate courts or decide laws. All they did was to create a congress which had little power and could not pass laws for the union of states apart from advising them. The weakness of this system brought about the social, political and economic disorder. Many Americans thought of money regarding pounds and shillings. There was no national money hence dollar had no value. The system lacked central leadership since it had no independent judiciary and offered no court systems in the jurisdiction of the national government.
They also faced foreign policy problems. The article of confederation it lacked foreign affairs head which is offered by the Constitution of United States. The lack of presidential figure made Americans lack representatives to conduct in foreign affairs. Sustainability of its power was doubtful. Other nations complained of American lacking methods of maintaining diplomatic relation though Monroe Doctrine in the 1800s exemplified major foreign policy which limited European colonization of western hemispheres.
They faced economic disorder which led to financial hardships for the young republic. In the 1780s, the nation was struggling to cope up with the debts incurred during the fight. These problems were worsened by the adoption of articles of confederation as the Congress had no mandate to regulate trade, had no power for taxation, and there wasn’t uniform system of currency. This made a trade within the states and foreign entities less efficient and more difficult in evaluating the value of goods.
After the independence,
United States and early republic faced legislative inefficiencies. This was caused by the inefficient legal framework offered by Articles of Federation. There was no voting proportionality since each state was accorded only one vote in the Congress in spite of significant discrepancy in states population. The policy of one state, one vote made it difficult to pass laws as majority opinions were not considered in law passage. The alteration of some legislations was difficult since the Congress of United States had to agree which lead to the impractical amendment process.
