A major thing that comes to my mind when considering the morality of pornography is Primum non nocere which translates to ‘first, to do no harm’ mainly with the issues of how both men and women are treated as sexual objects and not sexual beings in the porn industry. People are constantly downgraded and treated as if they are not individuals but as if they are objects throughout this industry, the pornography industry makes it seem as if both men and women want sex all the time, that rough hardcore sex is totally normal, and that men and women need to look a certain way in order to be wanted sexually. I do not in any way think that pornography should be considered a form of art or a way to express oneself, and it confuses me how that could even be ar
...gued.
I believe that primum non nocere is the most relevant in the case of pornography because of the fact that a lot of the issues with pornography is how it perceives people into thinking things are right or okay because of how people react in the videos. Just because in a pornographic video people are treated like objects, or tied up, or smacked around doesn’t mean that people actually like that or want that in real life. Porn is taken to extremes that should never even be considered morally right. Porn brings about very unhealthy views about human sexuality. It mainly portrays women as objects who constantly crave sex and should be flawlessly thin with large perky breasts. Women don’t always crave sex nor do they all look like should be on the
cover of a magazine, porn gives false assumptions to how women are and it not only leaves men feeling disappointed but also leaves women feeling like they aren’t enough.
Just because men and women are made in such a way to have sexual intercourse does not mean that they are made in a way to always WANT sexual intercourse. Everyone has different wants and just because you THINK that someone wants sex all the time does not mean that they do. Consent is not taught in the pornography industry and can often times lead others to believe that they do not need consent in order to preform sexual acts on women, which is completely wrong and immoral in itself.
Not only is violence seen throughout a large percentage of pornographic films but it also leads others to believe that it is okay to do ‘in real life’. A lot of times women and even men can be put into situations of violent sexual acts because it had been seen in a video and the person ‘thought they would like it, because the person did in the video.’ And that can sometimes be a dangerous situation where you are choked unconscious or beaten because your sexual partner thinks that it is okay because of a video they watched. In the reading provided on d2l the author stated that, “..’surveys of male college students who briefly watch porn report that thirty percent of the women they know would enjoy aggressively forced sex’ Does this prove that such pornography has an effect on people’s attitudes about what is acceptable, or does it also show that this will lead people to
act in certain harmful ways?”(222) I think the answer to both of those questions is yes, it does. Not only does it allow people to think that they can treat human beings as sexual objects but it also leads to them actually doing it and actually treating people in such a way.
One thing that has been scientifically found to be a negative effect of porn is that the body overuses chemicals that release tension and negativity, like what is supposed to be done during sex, but instead of it being done with another person is done with oneself or an object can cause people to not only become depressed more easily but also not have a very good sexual relationship with partners. The overuse of porn can turn into an addiction that you cannot get out of, and can be something that has a negative impact on all of the relationships that someone can acquire over the years. It can tear apart a marriage or even ruin ones adulthood and all relationships that turn physical won’t be able to live up to the expectation of what you have set back in your head. It is awful for not only the user but also the loved ones of the user.
I believe that pornography is a moral issue because people don’t want to think that what they are doing is wrong or negatively impacts them, not because it is a ‘gray area’. People know that it is wrong, but don’t want to admit it for fear of actually outing themselves as not being morally right. No one should be sexually objectified or harmed because the other person
thought that it was okay because they saw it in a pornographic film. No one should be belittled and made to feel lesser because it ‘looked cool’ in a pornographic film. No one should be assaulted because ‘she liked it’ in a pornographic film. Pornography is not art or a matter of free speech and a way to show of sexuality, it is downgrading and not something that should even be as popular as it is today. The only way to get rid of the pornography industry is to change people’s mindsets, and the only way to changes people’s mindsets is to get rid of the pornography industry. I’m not sure it will ever happen, but I hope that others can open their eyes to what the industry is doing before it is too late.
