Mr. Hundert Is a teacher at St. Benedict's school, he Is a student of history and Iike to teach about the western clvlllzatlon, the Romans and the Greeks. Also there Is a competition Mr. Julius Caesar held In the school. Mr. Hundert faces certain dilemmas such that his principals, virtue, morals were on the verge of being compromised, although his motives and intentions were all good. Mr. Sedgewick Bell a son of an american senator is the student with whom Mr. Hundert is facing certain challenges and Mr. Hundert tries to mould the character of Sedgewick in various ways.QI. Do you think Prof. William Hundert did the right thing? What are the ethical and moral dilemmas would he have experienced? Did his choice help or hinder Sedgewick? Prof. Hundert was passionate about teaching classical
...studies at St.
Benedict's school and he Is shown as a person who would always strive for the betterment of his students, he always encouraged students and guided them to follow the right path. Sedgewick Bell was a student of Mr. Hundert and the son of an american senator. Bell form the day of joining had shown signs that he was a person with some flaws in his character.Mr. Hundert had realized this and wanted to mould the character of this student of his so that he could be re-guided to the correct route from where he could be come a responsible person and a person of moral values and principles. During the competition of Yr. Julius Caesar' professor was In a dilemma that should he promote Sedgewick to the higher position which missed by 1 mark or let Martin Blythe ( A bright Student
retain the position. Here Mr. Hundert thought that It would be a morale booster for Sedgewick that he Is amongst the flrst three of the Mr. Julius Caesar Competitors, so Mr. Hundert promoted Sedgewick up the order. Here, Mr. Hundert had compromised the original rank of Mr. Blythe.
Although the intention or motive of Prof. Hundert was not to demoralize or dispirit Blythe. There is no question that Prof. Hundert was person of high moral values and principals. Here he had compromised for a good motive of his and hence, I think what he did was out of good intentions and hence cannot be Judged by being right or wrong. There was again a situation where he found out during the finals of the competltlon that Sedgewick was cheating.During that final competition there was the senator present and his son was amongst he three finalists, Mr. Hundert as soon as he found that Sedgewick Bell was cheating he told the Headmaster Mr. Woodbridge about the incident, but Mr.
Woodbridge didn't want to take any action at that time, as Sedgewicks father Mr. Bell was a senator and hence if found out in public that his son was a cheat then it would have hampered the image of the senator and also if it was out with media the reputation and future was at stake.Mr. Hundert, knew it would be very wrong if the deserving student did not win, but here he couldn't stop Sedgewick from cheating. He finally thought of posing a uestion which he knew was simple but out of syllabus, and Sedgewick wouldn't have the copying chits for that question and hence, Deepak Mehta won the competition and
Sedgewick got the second position.
Mr. Hundert was deeply hurt by this incident and that he had failed to improve the chracter of the student, he was so much willing to. Finally he had realized that he had done something unwillingly wrong, that he should have had Mr. Blythe get the deserving rank. After 25 years when there was again arrangements made by Mr. Sedgewick Bell for the competition and Professor Hundert was asked to conduct the final competition mong the three finalists. Mr. Hundert here to found out that Sedgewick was still cheating, now in a rather sophisticated manner with wireless devices. The professor was again in a dilemma as there was a crowd of people which had the Bell family and Sedgewicks close friends and also he was a candidate for the elections, thus pointing out the cheating would have demeaned Sedgewick.
Mr. Hundert had now realized that Sedgewick had chosen the wrong path the path that ha lead him to the destination where he was a failed man, a man without any dignity and principles. Professor Hundert apologized to Mr. Blythe and narrated the incident that had appened and why he felt bad that he had demoted Blythes position in the competition.
Finally, When Hundert gave Sedgewick the last lesson, and this entire conversation was heard by Sedgewicks child was present there and the child hated his dad, Sedgewick for that moment. This incident made Sedgewick feel ashamed of himself. In the end during a press talk Sedgewick was mentioning about the importance of virtues and principals in ones life and how the American people should adhere to it.Q2.
What would you do as a teacher? What would you
do as a student? The success of schools rely on how well the teachers work towards achieving the chool goals and what contribution they have given to the successful change in the school.I really fall short of ideas when i think from a teachers perspective, In todays world If i were to be at an institution of this high repute, I would be prepared to face students like Mr. Sedgewick Bell, there may many time arise such instances where there would be situations where I would have to compromise on the rules and regulations and personal ethics and principles. What Mr.
Woodbridge and Mr. Hundert did during the final competition would also be the solution I would resort to if were to be caught in such a situation. But, I would on the other hand had met Mr. Sedgewick Bell after the incident and made him understand how was it important for him to become a good man.
I would have requested my best known counselor to assist this child and guide him as he had a long way ahead of him. Also, I would have brought this to the notice of the headmaster and discussed with him as to how to deal with this student, he was not a not a son of any ordinary man, any action against him would have lead to deteriorating image of his senator father. But, I would have assured Sedgewicks father that Sedgewick would do very well if he upported me in certain things in moulding his child. There would be no changes in Judging, rather I would put in more effort than normal to make this child work harder and realize
the importance of being a man with principles and how being on the correct and true path would lead to real success rather than the false path that had failure in the long run. As a student, As a student, If i keep myself in place of Sedgewick, I would have taken that lesson in the end seriously and made up for the mistakes i have been doing.
It always is addictive, if you find a wrong way to get things done, you may get good cores but you will never be able to face yourself when you think of what have you earned. Thus, I would have given away my 2nd position when i would have realized my mistake and would do it in public, so that my children would think of me a man of values and ethics.Q3. How would behavior like Sedgewick impact organization behavior? How would Sedgewicks like attitude and behavior impact his life?Sedgewick like behavior will have certain impact on the organizational behavior, as people make up the internal up the internal social system of an organization, and Sedgewick being one of those individuals, his behavior would surely have an impact n the other working and studying along with him in the school.
As we saw in the movie that before Sedgewick Joined the school, the functioning was normal, as he got admitted and started making friends he started having impact of his behavior on his peers, they had started doing all kinds of unexpected things in the school. Also Prof. Hundert had certain change in his normal behavior as a teacher, although the change was a positive and a one with a good
motive, but yes Sedgewick had influenced that behavior. Also in the latter stage of the movie there was seen change in the way the management team had started looking towards St. Benedict School, the management had started to think in a much market oriented manner, as in they wanted to raise funds and for that, Prof. Hundert was forced to resign from the headmasters post, as he was thought to have outdated thinking and that funds were necessary for the functioning of the school and to bring about certain changes.
The impact of this attitude of Sedgewick on himself had shown adverse effects of it, when his son heard the conversation of his and professor, Sedgewick felt ashamed of himself. In his professional career also he would face many real time challenges which he ould find difficult to handle, because every time he cannot resort to cheating to get the answers. Also when posed with certain impromptu questions he would find himself in difficulty and hence would make could fool of himself. On the other hand if he ever realized his mistake and tried to improve he would be focusing on being realistic and also accepting failures. This would indeed help in moving up the ladder in various situation he is about to face in his life be it professional of family. Thus there certainly is an impact of sedgewicks behavior on the people around him in the school as well on himself.
