What is Values?
Values are principles, standards and beliefs that guide individuals in their daily lives. They help people determine what is right and wrong, good and bad, acceptable or unacceptable behavior. Values can be a source of personal strength, providing guidance to make decisions based on what is important to us. Values can vary from person to person and across different cultures. Some commonly held values include honesty, integrity, respect for others and oneself, responsibility for one’s own actions, hard work, kindness towards others and striving for excellence. These values form the basis of our social interactions with friends, family members and colleagues in the workplace. In addition to guiding our everyday actions in society at large, values play an important role in helping us develop our individual identities. By making conscious choices about which values we prioritize over others such as supportiveness rather than competitiveness we create an image of who we are as people. This helps define how we interact with other people and pursue goals that align with those values most important to us personally. Ultimately having strong core values allows individuals to build meaningful relationships with others who share similar ideals while also maintaining boundaries when it comes to certain beliefs or behaviors deemed unacceptable by those same values.
