What is Terrorism?

Terrorism is a form of political violence that seeks to achieve a goal through the use of fear and intimidation. It is the use of violence and threats to coerce, intimidate and create chaos in pursuit of a political agenda. Terrorism can take many forms and includes activities such as assassinations, bombings, kidnappings, hijackings, cyber-attacks and even attacks on critical infrastructure.Terrorism has been used throughout history by various groups for different purposes. It has been used by governments to suppress dissent or gain control over populations; it has also been used by groups seeking independence or autonomy from oppressive regimes. In more recent years, terrorism has become increasingly associated with radical Islamic extremism as well as other religious or ideological movements. Despite its association with specific ideologies or religions, terrorism is not limited to any one type of group or belief system. Terrorist tactics are often indiscriminate in their targets and victimsmeaning that anyone can be a victim regardless of race, religion or nationalityand are designed to generate widespread fear in order to accomplish their objectives. The impact terrorism can have on individuals, communities and societies is immense. Victims may suffer physical injury or death; survivors may experience psychological trauma long after the event; communities may experience economic losses due to business closures caused by security measures; infrastructure may be destroyed leaving areas without basic services; public trust in government institutions may erode leading to social unrest; levels of prejudice within society may increase due to stereotyping certain cultures or beliefs as terrorists’ activities become increasingly linked with particular groups; international relations between countries could deteriorate if terrorist organizations are linked with particular nations etc. Additionally, governments often respond harshly when faced with threats from these types of violent actors which further undermines civil liberties within society e.g., increased surveillance powers for law enforcement agencies etc.
