What is Self Concept And Self Esteem?
Self-concept and self-esteem are closely related, but they have distinct meanings. Self-concept is the mental image or perception one has of oneself, including physical characteristics, personality traits, abilities and roles. Self-esteem is a measure of how much a person values him or herself; it is an evaluation of self-worth. Both self-concept and self-esteem are developed in childhood and continue to evolve as we grow older.Our self-concept begins to form in infancy when we receive feedback from our parents and other significant adults in our lives. As we get older, our peers play an increasingly important role in shaping our beliefs about ourselves through their words and actions. Our successes or failures in school further shape these beliefs. We also absorb societal messages about how we should look, act or feel through media images and messages from popular culture. It’s important to note that these influences can be both positive and negative; some will support healthy development while others may lead to unhealthy views of oneself such as low self esteem. In order to maintain healthy self concept and high levels of self esteem it’s essential that the feedback we receive from others is consistent with our own internal assessment of ourselves (our inner dialogue). This means that rather than simply accepting negative comments from others at face value, it’s important for us to evaluate them against what we know about ourselves – if there’s a discrepancy then this should be addressed because it could mean that you’re holding an inaccurate view of yourself which could lead to low levels of confidence or even depression over time if left unchecked. It’s also important for us to develop positive coping strategies so that when life throws challenges at us (which it inevitably will), rather than getting stuck ruminating on why things are going wrong, we can take constructive action towards improving the situation however small those steps may be. Finally remember that the most powerful influence on your belief systems comes from within so no matter what external factors you face don’t forget to give yourself lots of love & respect.
