What is Richard The Lion Hearted?
Richard the Lion Hearted was a medieval English monarch who lived during the 12th century. He is remembered as one of England’s most famous and beloved kings, mainly due to his courage in battle and his sense of justice. Richard was born on September 8, 1157 in Oxfordshire to King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. As a young man, Richard showed great skill in military tactics and quickly earned the respect of those around him for his bravery and strength. When Henry died in 1189, Richard promptly took control of England and set about restoring order to the country following years of civil war between rival claimants to the throne. His reign saw many successes including campaigns against rebellious barons, fighting off foreign invasions from France and Wales, and leading an army on crusade to reclaim Jerusalem from Muslim rule. Throughout his life he demonstrated qualities that made him an admired ruler: he was pious yet pragmatic; courageous yet temperamental; generous but with a strong sense of justice. He had a deep love for chivalry which meant protecting women’s honor as well as punishing criminals harshly when necessary. In 1199 Richard met an untimely death whilst besieging a castle near Limousin when he was shot with an arrow by an unknown archer. Despite this early end to such a promising career, his legacy lives on today through popular culture such as books, films and plays all celebrating this iconic English king’s heroic deeds throughout history.
