What is North And South Vietnam?
North and South Vietnam were two distinct countries in the 20th century, separated by the 17th parallel. North Vietnam, also known as the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV), was created in 1945 when communist forces seized control of the northern half of Vietnam from French colonial rule. South Vietnam, or the Republic of Vietnam (RVN), was created in 1954 following the Geneva Accords which divided what had been a unified country at war with France. The split between North and South Vietnam quickly became a major Cold War issue that would dominate much of international politics in Southeast Asia for decades. The division between North and South differed greatly on many political, economic, social and cultural levels; this divide played an important role in fueling the eventual outbreak of war between the two sides. From its founding in 1954 until 1975, South Vietnam’s government was led by a series of military dictators who were backed by U.S. financial and military aid – including large amounts of troops sent to support their cause during what became known as The American War. North Vietnamese forces led by Ho Chi Minh fought against both U.S.-backed forces as well as other groups opposed to Communist rule over all or part of what is now modern-day Vietnam – including their own allies within North Korea and China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA). In 1975, after years of fighting and heavy casualties on both sides – particularly among civilians – North Vietnamese forces finally achieved victory over their southern adversaries with support from other communist powers like China and Russia; this conflict came to be known as The Second Indochina War or Vietnam War for short. This victory resulted in reunification under a single Communist government based out of Hanoi that still exists today under much different circumstances than existed during earlier periods when North and South were separate entities vying for control over all or parts of present-day modern-day Vietnam.
