What is Martin Luther King Jr?
Martin Luther King Jr. was an African American civil rights leader who had a great influence on the United States. He was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia and died on April 4, 1968 in Memphis Tennessee.King was largely responsible for ending segregation and racial discrimination through peaceful protests and acts of civil disobedience such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington D.C. His iconic I Have A Dream speech is remembered for its powerful words about equality, justice, peace and hope for all Americans regardless of race or religion.King’s activism inspired movements around the world to fight for freedom, justice and equality. He traveled extensively to spread his message of non-violence and peaceful protest as a means to combat racism and social injustice. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his tireless work towards achieving equal rights for all people regardless of race or creed. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy lives on today with annual celebrations held across America to commemorate his life’s work as well as numerous statues erected in his honor around the country honoring him as one of history’s greatest civil rights leaders. His dream that all people should be judged not by their skin color but by their character has become a reality in many parts of America today due to his hard work towards achieving true equality between races during turbulent times in our nation’s history.
