Low self-esteem can be caused by a variety of factors, such as negative life events or experiences, criticism from others, unhealthy relationships, physical appearance or body image issues, bullying or abuse. It is important to recognize the signs of low self-esteem in order to take appropriate steps to combat it.Common signs of low self-esteem include feelings of worthlessness or inadequacy; avoiding social situations; difficulty accepting compliments; feelings of guilt or shame; difficulty making decisions; avoidance of risk taking; overthinking mistakes and focusing on perceived flaws; perfectionism; difficulty making friends; comparing oneself to others in an unfavorable way. It is possible to combat low self-esteem with practice and dedication. There are several strategies one can use including positive affirmations (repeating positive statements about oneself); increasing constructive feedback from those around you (such as peers, family members); physical activity (exercising regularly releases endorphins which improve mood); setting realistic goals that are achievable (which helps build confidence); developing problem solving skills (which allows for more effective decision making); and seeking professional help when needed (such as therapy).
