What is Higher Order Needs?
Higher order needs are those motivations that drive an individual’s behavior beyond basic physiological and safety needs. Examples of higher order needs are the need for self-actualization, self-esteem, and belonging. The need for self-actualization is the drive to fulfill one’s potential and become all they can be. This involves personal growth, creative fulfillment, and a feeling of accomplishment. To meet this need, individuals must challenge themselves to learn new skills and knowledge or take on difficult tasks. The need for self-esteem is the desire to feel good about oneself. This includes feeling proud of accomplishments and having a positive view of oneself in general. To meet this need people must learn to accept themselves despite their shortcomings while also setting realistic goals to strive towards that make them feel capable. The need for belonging is the desire to form relationships with others as part of a larger social group or community such as family, friends, or work colleagues. Meeting this need requires cultivating strong interpersonal relationships in which mutual trust and respect are present. It also requires balancing individual desires with collective interests so that everyone feels like they belong together. These higher order needs are essential for leading a fulfilled life as they provide individuals with direction and purpose beyond simply surviving day-to-day existence. When met adequately these needs lead to greater happiness, satisfaction, motivation, productivity and overall wellbeing which ultimately leads to greater success in life both professionally and personally.
