What is General Edward Braddock?

General Edward Braddock was a British Army officer and commander-in-chief of the forces in North America during the French and Indian War. He was born in England in 1695 and was educated at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. After joining the British Army, he served in Flanders, Scotland, Ireland and Germany before being sent to America as a major general in 1755. In America, Braddock’s main mission was to secure control of the Ohio Valley from French colonial control. To this end, he led an expedition against Fort Duquesne at the Forks of the Ohio (modern day Pittsburgh). Despite vastly outnumbering their opponents, Braddock’s forces were badly defeated by a small but effective force of French and Indians who used guerrilla tactics to great advantage. The battle resulted in heavy losses for Braddock’s army with most of his officers killed or captured including himself who died on July 13th 1755 from wounds suffered during battle. After his death, General Edward Braddock became renowned for his bravery and leadership qualities during what proved to be a pivotal campaign during the war. As well as being remembered as one of Britain’s most successful commanders against France’s American presence he also set an example for future generations of soldiers through his commitment to duty and loyalty to King George II’s cause despite overwhelming odds. His legacy lives on today with several monuments dedicated to him around North America including one near Pittsburgh which commemorates his brave stand against impossible odds that fateful day in July 1755 when General Edward Braddock lost his life leading an ill-fated attack against Fort Duquesne at The Forks Of The Ohio River.
