What is Earthquakes?
An earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground caused by the release of energy in the Earth’s crust. Earthquakes are one of the most destructive natural disasters, capable of causing tremendous damage and loss of life. They occur without warning and can strike at any time, day or night.Earthquakes are caused by movements within the Earth’s crust, usually along fault lines where two tectonic plates collide. The movement releases huge amounts of energy in waves that travel through the rock and soil layers beneath our feet. As these waves reach closer to the surface, they cause intense vibrations that shake buildings, roads and bridges aboveground. When an earthquake strikes, it is important to stay as safe as possible until it stops completely. If you are indoors when an earthquake happens, find shelter under a sturdy table or desk if possible; stay away from windows or anything else that could fall on you; keep your arms around your head for protection; and move away from any unstable items like shelves or light fixtures. Outdoors, find an open area away from trees or power lines that may topple over during shaking; if in a car, pull over onto a shoulder on low ground with parking brakes engaged until shaking has stopped. After an earthquake has passed it is important to remember to check for damages before entering any damaged building as these structures may have lost structural integrity due to shifting foundation walls or compromised support beams which could lead to further collapse if entered improperly Immediately after experiencing an earthquake it’s recommended that people check their local area for emergency services such as fire departments or police stations who will be able to provide assistance with assessing damages and ensuring safety measures have been taken following the event It is also important to contact family members so they know everyone is safe Additionally agencies such as FEMA can provide people with resources needed during recovery efforts following major earthquakes such as housing support temporary supplies In some cases survivors may also be eligible for financial assistance depending on eligibility requirements set forth by each agency Earthquakes can be devastating but there are ways we can prepare ourselves before one occurs so we can minimize damage and loss of life during them. Knowing what steps you should take when an earthquake hits could save your life.
