Their similarities start from their birth place. Both men were born in Alor Sertar, Kedah. They also spent much of their childhood there, growing up in the same town but in a different era. It was also surprising that both former prime minister are coincidentally of mix parentage.
Tunku Abdul Rahman is of Malay descendent on his father’s side, but his mother, Che Menjalara is of Thai descendent. Mahathir’s father, Mohamad Iskandar is of Indian decent while is mother was a Malay.
To pursuit tertiary education, both Abdul Rahman and Mahathir went overseas to study. Abdul Rahman attended St Catharine's College in the University of Cambridge, England while Mahathir choose Edward VII Medical Collage in Singapore. To add on that, both men took up high respected subjects. Abdul Rahman studied law in St Catharine’s Collage and Mahathir studied medicine.
Both we
...re once great leaders of Malaysia. They were not merely leaders, but prime minister of Malaysia. Both men were practices democratic in politics. Similarly, both men were once members of United Malay National Organisation, UMNO.
Besides that, they were also elected to become president of UMNO at a time. It was stated that both ex leaders dedicated their leadership to help their birth race, Malays.
During Mahathir’s reign, he enhanced many rules and widened the scope of Malaysia’s economic, for example: Initially, tenders for small contracts were restricted to Malays only. Open tenders were still invited for large contracts. Abdul Rahman Being involved in Islam during their leadership is also what both leaders share. Abdul Rahman made Islam the official religion of Malaysia.
He also established the Islamic Welfare Organisation, PERKIM during his time.
PERKIM is an
organisation dedicated to help Muslim converts adjust to their new life as followers of Islam. Mahathir helped in the implementations of several Islamic development projects, such as The International Islamic University, the Islamic Bank and an Islamic Judicial System. Both men are respected and charismatic. Adbul Rahman used his charismatic skills to convince ethnic Chinese who migrated from China, to used Bahasa Melayu as the national language of Malaysia.
It takes good convincing for Chinese at that time to accept the language of a different culture.
Tunku Abdul Raham also travelled all over Malaysia (at that time Malaya), hosting talks to unite the citizens, asking them for support (mostly financially) towards the independence of Malaya. Because of his good charismatic skills, many eyes were open and thus, after collecting enough money, Tunku lead a team of people to England to discuss about Malaya’s independence. After a few years, Malaysia is finally a country of her own. Mahathir also has a gift of speaking. He was known for speaking his mind at international forums.
He spoke up about unfair trade practices between advanced countries and developing countries.
He stressed about how advanced countries are exploiting developing countries like Malaysia for raw minerals. His criticism drew a lot of attention and helped him gain much followers. As like all influential leaders, Tunku Abdul Rahman and Mahathir have a deep love for their country. Both men display a great case of patriotism. Tunku Abdul Rahman went all the way out to fight for Malaysia’s independence.
He did this because he has faith and vision that Malaysia will one day be a great nation on its own.
Mahathir did
many projects to help modernize Malaysia from an agriculture base country to an industrial based one. Mahathir is to be credited for the building of the Petronas Twin Towers, North-South expressway and the Sepang international circuit. By doing all these mega projects, Mahathir showed how much he wanted Malaysia to be an advance country.
His contributions are still much appreciated until today.
