Bedau, Hugo Adam 'The Death Penalty in America: Current Controversies. Oxford University Press | Capital Punishment does not deter crime in US' he traces the first legal milestone to oppose the death penalty back in 1972, when the Supreme Court declared that, under the then-existing laws death is unconstitutional | Bedau is committed to fighting capital crimes through alternative methods and describes the death penalty as uncivilized in theory and unfair and inequitable in practice. He has produced books relating to ca
pital punishment and political philosophy and believes that capital punishment has failed as a deterrent of capital crimes. He has no interest in determining the effect of the death penalty on crimes.
According to Burkhead, the death penalty should be replaced by long term punishment as a means of combating capital crime. He believes that justice is achieved through punishment where the principle of retribution is upheld through executions. However, he opposes the idea that punishments must mirror the crime for justice to be served. While he supports strict punishment for crime, he also believes in limits that are imposed by both justice and human dignity. The book 'A Life for a Life: The American Debate Over the Death Penalty' by Michael Dow Burkhead presents the controversial topic of the death penalty in American society.
The author follows the history of executions in America from the first one
in 1608 where George Kendell was put to death to the supreme court ruling of 2008.
