While utilizing the acronym SMART for the development of professional goals to transition from registered nurse to an advanced practice registered nurse, family nurse practitioner, it is sure to make it focused and smooth. SMART goals necessary to reach a professional peak as a family nurse practitioner are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time specific (Massachusetts Institute of Technology Human Resources, 2017). The purpose of this assignment is to divide these goals into both short and long term with a strategic plan explaining how the implementation will attack these goals to become a knowledgeable and competent nurse practitioner.

Short Term Goals

Short term goals include, but are not limited to completing this course, passing boards for advanced practice nurse, and obtaining a job as a family nurse practitioner (FNP). Primarily, the m

ain objective at this time is to complete this final course necessary for a master’s degree in Nursing and FNP. This is to include the given assignments and 144 clinical hours and patient quota necessary. Upon completion of this course and graduation from this nationally accredited program, a national certification examination in family nurse practitioner will need to be taken and passed. A plan is in place to attend a live review in preparation for the board examination. Aside from this, a schedule to study information will be organized and designed to allow plenty of time to prepare for the board exam with positive outcome. Prior to practicing as an APRN in this state, or any other state, the FNP certification exam by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners National Certification Board (AANPCB), a beginning level test will need to be taken an passed. will be scheduled to take no more than two months completion of live course review. Once this is completed, a FNP must complete a total of 720 hours of clinical time under a preceptor/ sponsor, not to include the hours spent while still in school under the advisory of a physician or certified APRN. These hours must be completed prior to practicing independently in the state of Mississippi, regardless of whether or not one is applying for privileges in controlled substances or not (Mississippi Board of Nursing, 2013).

Long Term Goals

Long term goals include but are not limited to becoming involved and active in both the local and national nurse practitioner associations, teaching students who wish to further their education to become an APRN and being open to precept students seeking similar goals. I have been an active member of the Mississippi State Board of Nursing and look forward to becoming an active member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). With that said, I would like to get to the point of being able to contribute in a legislative aspect and work for the rights of APRNs as professionals.

I have been fortunate during my time as a student to have found such caring and compassionate nurse practitioners to precept me in each course. Each has demonstrated the importance of being both a confident and competent provider while working with a broad spectrum population in the care and treatment provided. After having struggled in finding a preceptor, I would be honored and open to accepting those students who may feel the same way while completing their clinical hours. I vow to not forget where I

once was in the journey.

The long term goal will be completed with a career educating those who are on the journey that I am now on. Instructors and professors are a staple in the journey of one succeeding in a career and their goals and dreams. In this field and area of practice, an educator does not stop at the student, but also continues on with the patient/ family education and involving them in their plan of care.

Conclusion

The SMART goals are set in a way that they are easily obtainable with a plan of action in both short and long term scenarios. There are times during this journey that frustration has set in, but with the support from family and the drive to continue, these goals and dreams to become an APRN FNP can be obtained. The goals listed above will allow focus and determination to prepare for a successful career.
