In this exercise you have to choose between **c’est** – singular demonstrative adjective **ce** combined with **est** that translates as: *it is, this is, that is* – versus **il est /elle est**, the subject pronoun combined with **est**, that translates as: *he is / she is.*

Note: “Il est”(elle est, ils/elles sont) is followed by an adjective and “c’est” is followed by a noun.

In this case, what follows the verb **est** is a NOUN **frère**, even if there are two more words that precede the noun: **mon nouveau**, they just describe the final noun. We’ll therefore put **c’est.**

C’est mon nouveau frère, Hugo.

In this case we have two adjectives: *brun et très petit*, an no noun in the sentence.

We’ll use: **Il est** because from the adjective form we can see that the subject is masculine singular (there are no **-e** for feminine or **-s** for plural added).

Il est brun et très petit.

The words that follow the verb are here: **assez intelligent**. Even if **assez** is an adverb, the final word is the masculine singular adjective **intelligent**. So we’ll put **il est**.

À mon avis il est assez intelligent.

In this case we have a noun: **un garçon.** We have to use the form **c’est.**

Oui, c’est un garçon mignon et génial!

In this case we have just a masculine singular adjective **gentil** without a noun, we’ll therefore put **il est**.

Il est gentil!

In the first sentence we have a feminine singular noun: **ma petite soeur, Léa**, so we’ll put **c’est**.

In the second sentence we have an adjective: **marrante**, so we have to put: **elle est**, as we talk about a girl, **elle**.
