As part of our ICN group project, we will be utilizing Hofstede's or Trompenaars' theory to guide our analysis. To effectively apply these theories, we will focus on the cultural dimensions that reveal the greatest distinctions. Our group will specifically investigate the 1999 merger between Nissan and Renault, which is noteworthy in terms of cultural differences given that Nissan is a Japanese company and Renault is French.
Analysing the dimension of "individualism vs. collectivism" will be crucial, particularly considering that Japan values collectivism while France prizes individualism. Work oriented towards groups and loyalty are prevalent in Japanese business, but individual self-care is emphasized in
...France. This may significantly influence the management style and functioning of the Nissan-Renault alliance.
The degree of masculinity and femininity within a culture is significant to consider, as it can affect gender roles in various companies. Japan has a strong emphasis on masculinity, whereas France has high levels of femininity and gender equality. In addition to this, other factors such as uncertainty avoidance and attitudes towards time may also play a role in the integration of workforces.
The application of cultural theories will highlight similarities and conflicts in culture, aiding in the assessment of the merger's success in terms of intercultural awareness between Nissan and Renault.
