Madrigal is the name given to a type of music for voices which primarily uses secular poetry. This musical genre was prominent in two different time periods: first, during the 14th century, and second, in the 16th and early 17th centuries.

Madrigal, a popular vocal genre in the Renaissance Era, derives its lyrics from poetry and is typically performed in either a cappella or polyphonic texture. The madrigal composed by Jacques Arcadelt exemplifies this style, as it was written for four singers who alternated between homophonic and polyphonic sections. In homophonic texture, one voice takes the lead while others provide supporting sounds. Conversely, polyphony requires at least two voices to sing simultaneously.
