Implementing an Information Management Strategic Plan Essay Example
The conclusions that can be drawn regarding Providence’s purpose and rationale for initiating their information systems analysis project/s is that Information Management Strategic Plan it is the most important part of the Providence Health care. Where the management of information is seen as the most important element of brining the whole organization together and blending resident and patient care across different areas. The purpose for this plan was to set a new vision for information management as well as to create a process for setting priorities and managing new initiatives through which has built commitment to the plan and awareness of their needs regarding of the information management. The information management strategic planning process has bought in view the information management and information systems needs of Providence Health Care as an integrated health care delivery system .The three key elements that exist to ensure that
...the success of the execution of the Plan are based on committee structure, project management methodology and process for decision making.
The connections that can be made in regard to project types, stage and organizational levels is that the organizational transformation is based on learning and will also require skills for systems thinking, team development and process improvement.Corporate and support services can be categorized into 3 parts; Environmental services which would include housekeeping, food, nutrition services etc. ; Resource and information which would include information systems etc. ; Human development which would include labor relations, organizational developments etc. Individuals have been identified to serve in a leadership capacity with respect to these programs, clinical services and corporate and support services.
These individuals are basically known as Leaders who basically have multiple responsibilities in
order to support the evolution of their particular program, corporate and service support or clinical service. The future path for the organization will be different from today’s. As these formerly separate organizations combine to operate as one entity, services need to be consolidated and fused together. The success of these efforts is strongly linked to the effectiveness and efficient usage of information.
Each of the organizations have its own approach to information management and a separate set of information system 3) In order to accomplish any given set of tasks or projects effectively an organization must have a work plan or procedure. Without such a procedure or a work plan, activities are performed in a haphazard manner and with little if any coordination. The results are that the various intermediate products rarely fit together into a whole, and worse yet the finished product or service rarely meets the initial specifications. A Life cycle is the course of developmental changes through which a project passes from its inception as a project request to the mature state as characterized by a stable production environment.
In the Providence Health Care case you can see a life cycle which the organization follows so that they can implement the information management strategic plan through out the organization. In order to view the current state of the information management and information systems with regard to the three types of information needs identified as: Clinical and Clinical Support Information and Systems, Planning and Improvement Information and Systems and Administrative Information and Information Systems, a number of questions were asked from the individuals who participated in the assessment.A lot of information and data was collected through this assessment
because it was decided upon that the best approach would be to get direct and immediate input rather than sending out questionnaires which would take along period of time and it would be a lot costly and the information gather from it would be not efficient or correct. Those who were in attendance for the assessment were then divided into groups based upon whether their focus was clinical, planning and improvement or administrative.
A series of large wall charts were posted in breakout rooms or hallways and the various groups were asked to form their answers to the questions at the appropriate wall chart and to work through the various processes and to add any additional comments related to information and information systems. This life cycle was very helpful and it also provided information regarding the future of PHC. 4) The system life cycle analysis that was apparent in the Providence case is Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC).It is based on 7 steps which would be as follows:- Planning – establishing the plans for creating an information system Analysis – the users and infromation technology specialists collaborate to collect, comprehend, and logistically formalize the requirements. Design – this is where the technical blueprint of the system is created. Development – executing the design into a physical system.
Testing – testing the developed system. Deployment – the systems are placed and used in the actual workforce.Maintenance – keeping the system up to date with the changes in the organization and ensuring it meets the goals of the organization. These can be simplified into 3 basic categories: Analysis, Design and implementation. 5) the previous automation was information systems which
either had to be replaced or integrated to support the strategic direction for the organization.
The technologic solutions (hardware, software and infrastructure) that support the collection and dissemination of information. It also included focus on the development of enterprise-wide applications, utilize the interface engine to support integration, focus on staged deployment of systems based on defined priorities etc. 6) Since the PHC is based on learning and will require skills for systems thinking, team development and process improvement. So it is important they pay special attention on their human resource department as well, so that their information management plan can succeed. And they need to pay special attention on the management of information across the organization rather than the organization’s information systems needs.
They need to asses the internal and external environment with the regard to information systems and information management; established a clear future vision that could be easily fit together and understood at all levels of the organization, analyzed the discrepancies between the current and desired future and identified as the key strategies for realization of identified directions or paths of the organization. An important outcome of this procedure is a shared understanding of the importance of effectively managing the information and an organizational commitment to strategy implementation. In addition to the implementation of the Information Management Strategic Plan supports the organization’s performance measurement and management strategy.
