As part of my major assignment, I had to modify a text and discuss my planning and thought processes in an oral presentation. The specific text I chose for examination was the fairy tale "Hansel and Greeter" by the Brothers Grimm. Known for their contributions to fairy tales, riddles, and children's stories, the Brothers Grimm were born in 1785 and passed away between 1860 and 1870. Their lifelong dedication revolved around writing these stories.
During my childhood, "Hansel and Greeter" held a special place as one of my favorite stories. However, my perspective on it has significantly changed over time. When I was young, I loved the idea of a gingerbread house decorated with chocolate, marshmallows, jujubes, and various sweets. I often wondered why we couldn't have such a candy house at home. Witches, trolls, and dragons fascinated me because they were so d
...ifferent from everyday life. Even now at age 15, fantasy movies still appeal to me more than action films do. Nevertheless, revisiting this story as a teenager brought about an unexpected experience.
Despite its presentation as a typical fairy tale,"Hansel and Greeter" possesses much darker undertones compared to the stories featuring adorable animals or noble knights that we commonly associate with this genre.
Instead of changing the narrative voice in my creative response, I focused on acknowledging social injustices within the story. To address these challenges, I opted for a modern-day newspaper format and incorporated my own stories and articles. However, finding suitable newspaper text and paper to achieve an authentic look was quite challenging. Additionally, understanding the old formal English language and complex vocabulary proved difficult for me. Consequently, I ha
to search various internet sites to find a story that I could comprehend and translate into contemporary English. Upon reflection and multiple re-readings, it became evident that this particular story has a dark and sorrowful background which may not be appropriate for children. Henceforth, I will no longer view these so-called "children's poems" in the same way. The tale of Hansel and Gretel tackles serious issues such as child abuse, famine, and murder. As a teenage boy, comprehending the brutality depicted in this tale might prove challenging; it might simply pass over my head!
I apologize for deviating from the main topic and discussing the story of Hansel and Gretel for those who are unfamiliar with it. Allow me to summarize this fairy tale so that you can fully comprehend and reflect upon the information provided. Hansel and Gretel is a German fairy tale taking place in the early 1800s, which centers around a poor woodcutter, his wife, and their children. Due to a lack of food, the woodcutter's wife convinces him to abandon their children in the forest. Ingeniously, Hansel leaves pebbles as markers on their initial attempt to find their way back home after being abandoned. Upon successfully returning home, their stepmother persuades their father to leave them even deeper in the forest. This time, Hansel plans ahead by leaving breadcrumbs as markers but soon discovers they have been eaten when they try to retrace their steps. While wandering aimlessly, they stumble upon a house made entirely of sweets and begin indulging themselves. However, they quickly realize that things are not as delightful as they appear when a welcoming lady invites them inside.
In reality, they find themselves trapped in a terrifying situation – Hansel is imprisoned while Gretel is forced to take care of him until the witch intends to eat him. The witch prepares an oven and asks Gretel to test its heat by going inside it. Cleverly, Gretel pretends not to understand and convinces the witch to demonstrate instead. Seizing this opportunity, Gretel pushes the witch into the oven where she meets her demise through burning.
