Over time genetic engineering technology has been used to cancel the effects of what are considered the bad genes in organisms. Genetic engineering involves the addition of new DNA to an organism. The technology has been so well developed that it has been argued that through DNA modification, it is possible to regulate the traits that a human being has. Genetic engineering has been seen as capable of improving all aspects of the human life from creation of new forms of life to improving existing lives. Genetic engineering has allowed people to have a say in children born and to outlive many diseases previously considered deadly. This is despite the negative effects that genetic engineering can have on the lives of people and other organisms including plants, developed or improved through genetic engineering.
Genetics engineerin
g allows individuals to develop cones of themselves.
Through cloning individuals are able to produce carbon copies of themselves (Simmons, 2008). This process takes advantage of the fact that most body cell apart from red blood cells and germ cells have identical nucleus containing all individual gens and this makes it easy for most cells to copy the genetic identity of an individual through the formation of new cells. While animal cloning has been done over time, the cloning of the human life has not been so forthcoming due to technicalities associated with acquiring a full set of human chromosomes to be used in the cloning (Simmons, 2008). If successfully done, then cloning can ensure that life never comes to an end, for the clones would be able to continue living even after the death of the donor. Clones would also serve a
viable and compatible donors in organ transplant when the donor requires any of his or her organs to be transplanted (Simmons, 2008).
Genetic engineering especially on human beings allows for parents to get children with specific traits and genetically dictated abilities that suit their requirements (Simmons, 2008). The technology allows parents to select an egg and a sperm from donors who possess the desired traits and abilities and these are inserted in the mother’s womb. Recent technology also allows the manipulation of the genes of the children to emphasize some traits and down play others. In essence parents are guaranteed of getting the children they desire without the uncertainties that come with natural conception. The parents are guaranteed of the intelligence of the children born, their abilities and are assured that no genetic diseases will be passed down to the children born after genetic modification (Simmons, 2008).
Genetic engineering has also helped the human race deal with diseases that threaten the existence of the species. This technology is beginning to revolutionize medical and surgical practice. It has enabled the development of technologies that identify and cure gene related conditions. By making it possible to identify genes prone to specific diseases such as cancer, gen engineering makes it possible for these diseases to be prevented by dealing with the gens making one prone to them. It also helps in the development of treatments that not only treat the illnesses but also correct the gen make up making one prone to the diseases. Whether the advantages of genetic engineering out way the negative effects and the ethical dilemma that come with it is still not decided but it is
clear that under the right legal framework, genetic engineering is capable of revolutionizing the human species.
