A gender stereotype is whereby some groups of individuals have a certain mindset concerning a certain gender in their society. Stereotypes are just propaganda or mere allegations as those who perpetuate them cannot provide facts to support their claim. In our daily lives, we are easily influenced by the media as it takes most part of our time, from social media to the mainstream one. This is because they are the one that shapes our life, thoughts, ideas, and even our mode of behavior. A real case example is the advertisement carried out by a magazine in New York, dubbed, “the power of women” and as a lady was depicted on the cover page, were half-naked women trying to promote a brand of new product in the market, a celebrity to be precise.
The stereotype here was trying to figure out why they
...used a lady as object to make the paper sale and not to promote the business. The media are circulating adverts with naked women to arouse the feelings of potential buyer especially men. I totally agree with the statement that the media is to blame for these negative stereotypes. A study carried out reveals those consumers are not aroused by observing the parts of the female to make impulse buying but because of their tastes and preferences. I agree solely that advertisement can bring severe damage to the body image if used irresponsibly.
Two journals, ‘“Mass media as an influence on gender stereotypes” by Charlton Pun and the “Gender stereotype” by Martin King argues that male chauvinism has been there time since immemorial used by male to make themselves superior while women are inferior
and depicted as sex object. Unless I and you do something, people will continue to use social media to promote social stereotype for the foreseeable future for their own gain.
