Factors that project a company’s culture include patterns of behaviors through the company’s employees. “Culture is a composite of many factors that project the shared values of the people who work there. The culture can strengthen and reinforce individual behaviors and individual behaviors reinforce the culture (Timm 2013 p. 1)”. These positive behaviors are expressed through the employee’s customer service. For businesses, customer loyalty and retention are most important.

What are three major elements that complicate listening? Give customer-service related examples of each. Three major elements that complicate the listening process are internal elements within the listener’s mind, environmental elements surrounding the communication, and interactional elements that arise especially from listener self-centeredness and self-protection (Timm 2013). All of these elements are considered to be “noise”: sounds that are irrelevant to the conversation. Internal elements stem from the listener being preoccupied with a different problem, having a headache, or being bias to what is being communicated.

Stereotypes have been a major complication in how we communicate and who we communicate with as well. This preconceived notice creates a barrier that restricts the message from being heard and understood. Environmental elements include the sound of a television, lawn mower, or others conversing. An example of interactional elements includes self-protection; anticipating what might be said and reacting to that instead of to what the customer is actually saying. Consumers experience this when products are being sold or marketed by businesses. Salesmen may anticipate what a consumer may say to persuade the consumer to buy their product.
