The paper will describe the concept of outsourcing and how it is used by a number of companies in order to reduce their costs and various other benefits that they receive from outsourcing. The paper will use various sources in order to support the viewpoints that will be discussed in the paper. All the sources will be appended in the APA format at the end of the paper. What is Outsourcing? “Outsourcing entered the business world in the 1980s and often refers to the delegation of non-core operations from internal production to an external entity specializing in the management of that operation.The decision to outsource is often made in the interest of lowering firm costs, redirecting or conserving energy directed at the competencies of a particular business, or to make more efficient use of worldwide labor, capital, technology and resources. ” (Wikipedia, 2007 ) Outsourcing has been taken up by a number of companies because it allows the companies to concentrate on the core work that that they do rather than the support activities that they also need to keep in mind wh

The outsourcing allows the companies to work upon the core competencies that they hold. Outsourcing is a way of allowing those people who are competent to do such work while the others do the work that they are competent for. For example, look at the value chain of a company as has been displayed below: Looking at the picture, it can be seen that the firm infrastructure and the human resource management are two of the support activities of the company. In order to keep these activities to a minimum and concentrate on the production of the company, outsourcing would be used.

This would allow the company to concentrate more on the core activities rather than the support ones. Any manufacturing company would prefer outsourcing its call center or its human resource management work because there are a number of complications that they need to deal with already in production and if they take up a lot of time in the support activities then there would be an imbalance between activities and the company would not be able to deliver to the customers on time.
