This essay will evaluate the question distinctively visual images convey distinctive experiences, Evaluating the idea that visual images give us distinct experiences and how certain experiences can change our destiny. I will discuss this question using my chosen theme that is destiny, In Tom Tyker’s Run Lola Run and my related text Charlie Kaulfmans and Michael Gondrys Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. Tom Tyker uses the theme of destiny to show how interaction between individuals can create a distinctive experience.

When Lola embarks on her three runs, she bumps into and interacts with certain individuals on her way, A mother ,a boy on a bike and a woman from her father’s office, Lola’s interaction with these people changes their fate for better or for worse further m

ore impacts their destiny. For example when Lola runs in to the mother on her first run ,the flash-forward shows the mother having her child taken away, on the second run the flash-forward shows the mother winning the lottery and on the third run the flash-forward shows the mother having a religious conversion all of these are based on Lola’s interaction with the individual.

The flash-forwards are dulled in hue and create a visual contrast to the rest of the film. The scenes happen almost automatically after the encounter and a jump cut is used, Within the scene images are pieced together in a montage are used to depict the individuals new future, with the sound of a flash from a camera going off to signify that this is a snapshot of pivotal points that influence the whole new life, these sequences depict th

future yet to come.

Almost like ultimate universe and the paths and actions that influence us to get there, Lola’s impact on others destiny also shows how powerful she is as an individual and her influence on others. On Lola’s third run she stumbles in to a casino, and try’s her luck at winning a game of roulette to procure the funds for Mani without turning to crime. Lola wins her first game and makes a second bet, the close up of the ball on the roulette wheel signifies fate and risk. But Lola harnesses her scream her power to change whatever fate is coming her way.

She now controls her destiny with her scream, this is visual conveyed with the glass within the casino shattering around her and the ball rolling until it falls upon her number. The distinctive visuals of Tom Tyker’s run Lola run give us the viewer an idea of the power of every little chance and encounter in life the flash-forwards show how interaction between individuals can create a distinct experiences and how one person can influence the destiny of the people they make contact with.

Through the film Lola struggles against her 20 minute time limit the unveiling of the different destiny’s that could possibly occur are like Lola’s extra lives in a videogame every time she learns and takes something away and through these distinctive experiences Lola changes her destiny. In my related text is Charlie Kaufman and Michael Gondry’s film Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind ,A film about a couple who impulsively enlist the services of a company to have the memory’s of

there relationship erased after they break up.

Micheal Gondry uses the technique of symbolism in the film to create a mood and show the various stages and emotions in the relationship that the character experienced. An example of this is Clementine’s ever changing hair colour through the film we learn about the lead characters relationship as Joel rewinds his memory. Micheal Gondry uses flash backs(analepsis )to tell the story ,he uses Crosscutting and Continuity cuts to move from present reality to memory sequence These cuts take us seamlessly and logically from one scene to another. This cut helps to move the narrative along and build suspense.

In the memory sequence a jump cut is used to move to the next memory also at times when clementine disappears as the memory is erased the shot becomes distorted or a locking off (stop trick) a special effect camera technique is used. The Flashbacks are used to recount the events that happened before the opening sequence of the film where Joel awakes and has no memory of Clementine, the flashbacks fill in the crucial backstory for us the viewer, The story is told from the most recent occurrences, then through past memory’s and pivotal moments of the relationship then back to the first day Joel and Clementine met.

At the start of the film Joel awakes and has no memory of clementine he ditches work and impulsivly catchs a train out to Montauk on the train he meets Clementine for an unknown second time ,In this scene clementines hair is bright blue the colour blue being symbolic of new beginings this scene is ironic once

the viewer is aware of the backstory and events that have taken place. The blue hair can also be a reference to the new beginnings that Joel and Clementine are experiencing due to the procedure they had done there second chance (fresh start) at there relationship.

As joel rewinds his memory clementine is shown to have orange hair,When Clementine’s hair is orange, she and Joel’s relationship is beginning to fail, Orange is symbolic of deceit ,distrust and danger. Before the strain clementines hair colour is red as she and joel begin their relationship red symbolises passion and love all the things people experience at the start of a relationship this is the clementine joel try’s to save. Then at the first memory joel has of meeting clementine her hair is bright green representing new life symbol of a new relationship.

I believe Gondry uses this technique of symbolism to show to the viewer’s the different stages the relationship goes through and its rebirth at the end . The entire film is a visual experiences in itself the visual of the flash backs and showing the relationship /getting erasing show the distinct experience these individuals experienced and these experience’s getting taken away alter the destiny of the character that would have or could have happened, similar to the flash-forwards in run Lola run showing how interactions between individuals can create a distinct experiences and influence the destiny of the people involved.

The theme destiny is important for Lola ,Joel and clementine it gives the characters an opportunity to change their fate and have a second chance ,all of these characters learn from their

distinctive experiences and change their destiny, from Joel and clementine’s memory erasing providing a clean slate to restart their relationship and make it better this time, to Lola harnessing her power within to control the roulette ball to win the money and save mani.

In conclusion this essay has evaluated favourable that distinctively visual images create distinctive experiences and these certain experiences can in fact change our destiny , through our characters have being exposed to certain visuals such as Lola being exposed to the future of others and herself dying if she goes at getting the money for mani in a dishonest or unethical way ,and joel being exposed to the forgotten joyful memory’s with clementine at a point in there relationship prior to the bitterness he felt for her ,uncovered during his memory erasing.

They have taken away with them new perception and experience such as Lola harnessing her power within to change her fate and win a game of roulette to procure funds. to joel and clementine learn of there prior relationship and receive an imperfect and defective recount of there history but still being drawn together and committed on making it work this time. All of these characters have then been able to make more informed choices based on these new experience and wisdom that comes with them and further more change there own destiny.
