During the Philippine Revolution, Mariquina served as Manila province's capital from 1898 to 1899 when Emilio Aguinaldo declared Philippine Independence in Kawit, Cavite.

During the 20th Century, after the United States took control of the Philippines, the country's name was changed to "Marikina". On June 11, 1901, Act No. 137 was enacted by the First Philippine Commission, resulting in the formation of Rizal province. As the only legislative body in Luzon during that period, this commission included Marikina and other nearby towns in Manila within the newly established province.

On November 7, 1975, through Presidential Decree No. 824, Marikina and the other western towns of Rizal were incorporated into the new Metropolitan Manila Area. Marikina had become known for its skilled shoemakers due to years of experience in shoe manufacturing. This expertise prepared them for the influx of heavy industries in the 1950's. As these industries were established, a significant number of workers decided to settle in Marikina, causing the population to rapidly grow. Unfortunately, this uncontrolled expansion had negative consequences, such as the pollution of the Marikina River due to factories and informal settlers residing along its banks.
