The Color Vision and Art (2006) Exhibit compared the artistic styles of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) and Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564). Despite being considered the greatest painters of their time, they differed significantly in terms of color preferences and artistic techniques. Michelangelo's artworks featured vibrant and contrasting colors, while da Vinci opted for more subdued and harmonized color schemes. Additionally, Michelangelo highlighted sharp outlines against a contrasting backdrop, whereas da Vinci blended his elements to avoid prominent silhouettes.
Da Vinci's use of the oil painting technique enabled him to achieve depth and intensity of coloring and transparency in the effects of light and shade. The painting "Benois Madonna" introduced a new technique for which he became well-known. This technique, known as chiaroscuro, focuses on shading that emphasizes tone rather tha
...n color, resulting in a three-dimensional shape. In the painting, Mary's dress displayed varying shades from black to pale blue to nearly white, allowing Da Vinci to artificially expand the range of luminance while maintaining unity throughout the artwork (Douma, 2006).
Michelangelo employed exaggerated contrast or "cangiantismo" by blending colors with black and white, intensifying the range of contrast in his works. This approach resulted in a surreal and desaturated appearance in the lighter areas of each color. The restoration of the Sistine Chapel ceiling and the Doni Tondo has unveiled his exceptional talent for using a fully-saturated palette, showcasing his originality as a colorist.
In Michelangelo's painting "Doni Holy Family," the yellow color of Joseph's cloak stands out as the only hue with a high luminance in its pure form. Unlike the other colors in the painting, which vary in
saturation and have a somewhat metallic appearance, the yellow robe maintains its original quality without needing to be desaturated. Even the black color of Joseph's tunic has been desaturated by Michelangelo (Douma, 2006).
