Social phobia or social anxiety disorder which is characterized by a person going through intense and extreme anticipatory anxiety related to having a feeling of embarrassment in the social interactions. In these interactions, people affected have a feeling that some people are or will scrutinize them. The lifetime prevalence of social anxiety has been estimated to be having a range between 7 and 12 percent.

This disorder has a higher risk to the young people having an age less than 60 years. Social anxiety in a negative way influences the quality of life in aspects such as social functioning, mental health and vitality. In addition, it has been found that work productivity is very in the group of people affected by social anxiety disorder. In general, a person with this social disorder develops fear of the most social situations.

ducted comprised a group of 200 participants both males and females. A control group comprising of 200 participants were also used in this research study. AWS were invited to participate from self help groups. This comprised 87% of the total number of participants employed in this research study. The other group of participants (13%) was taken from general medical practitioners, private speech clinics, community health centers, and departments of speech pathology in the public hospitals. An experienced speech pathologist was used to diagnose stuttering in all AWS.

In assessment, demographic measures comprised of level of education, age and sex at which people were diagnosed with stuttering. A behavior measure for establishing the frequency of stuttering was taken from the three minute speech recorded in the process of collecting information.

Mean frequency of stuttering in the case of AWS was in the moderate to low range of severity of approximately 4%. The results showed that AWS were more anxious in comparison to all factors used in the assessment. There were established significant interactions or differences for health risks. In both groups studied, it was established that risks for social anxiety showed an increase with increase in age.

The 200 AWS taken in this study had similar health status and education to the participants taken as controls. The female AWS were same as the male AWS on issues such as severity of stuttering and health risks. It was established that the risks in terms of health increased as age increased in both males and females. Place of birth, sex, type of employment and levels of education did not show any correlation with the levels of anxiety. Anxiety was however significantly elevated in the case of AWS across all measures of anxiety with moderate up to large effect sizes being witnessed. AWS were identified to have higher risks of getting social phobia as compared to the control group taken in this research study. They showed high levels of fears in certain

things as compared to the control groups.
